i was driving my truck and the fuel filter clogged up and killed my truck so i changed it and now i cant get my truck started. i have ran out of diesel before and it took me forever to get it started but its just not starting now i primed it and even emptied my tank and filled it with new diesel now what should i do?

My guess is that there's still air in the fuel system. You're getting fuel out the bleader screw right? If so, try pumping the primer with the bleader closed till you can't push it anymore, then try starting it. it may take several times of repeating to get it to start. This usually works.

Priming can take up to a half hour if donne in correctly.

Heres what I used to do before the FASS.

1. Prefill fuel filter with diesel and put a little grease around the gasket to make sure it seats up.

2. Open bleeder and pump till fuel comes out.

3. Ccrank truck for no more than 10 seconds

4. Pump till I cant pump anymore then open bleeder.

5. Close bleeder and give it a few more pumps.

6. Crank till it starts but dont crank longer than 15 seconds. If necessary keep pumping.

well i tried that and it didn't work. i think my fuel pump is out because it didn't even make any noise when i would turn the key forward and not start it to see if it was working. so it may have been the fuel pump and not the filter that made the truck to die. i mite as well upgrade the system now because i have a ppe hott 2 on it. thanks for your help guys

There isn't an electric fuel pump on these trucks. So you won't hear a pump run with the key on, unless you've already added a aftermarket lift pump.

Fill out your signature with your truck information, this will help everyone with giving you advice, that way we know what mods you have already done.

pump on these trucks is on the motor. pump is driven by timing belt and it creates a vacuum to pull fuel from tank to pump, and then pressurizes it from there to the reg and then rails. you will not hear it, like tracker said, simply because the pump does not come on till the motor is started.

if you're sure it was the filter that caused the initial problem, then swapping it out should have fixed it. does the truck just crank but not fire?? could still be air gettin into the system somewhere. if you have a tuner/ scanner of some sort, check ecm, see if it has thrown any codes. this could be a start in figuring out why it aint firing....

Yep like they said.

The Duramax trucks have no pump whatsoever they rely sortof on a vacuum of about 3psi from a small pump mounted on the backside of the CP3.

This is why you can spend a lot of time priming the system.

well i looked at my codes and it just had one for my trany so i cleared it and turned it back to stock. and it will turn over and but just not start up. if you spray a little starting fluid it will run till its out of fluid and its puffing out a light color smoke. is there anyway i can check the injector pump?

first things first.... never never never use starter fluid. these trucks have a grid heater in them and using starter fluid can cause a very big BOOM and a lot more problems than you already have.

as far as testing the injection pump, i would say get it to a dealer or a local knowledgeable diesel mechaninc. they will have the equipment necessary to test it. getting down to the cp3 is a lot of work, something i wouldn't know if you are comfortable dealing with or not. if not, dealer or mech. would be your best bet.

however with that all said, are you 100% positived you dont have an air leak somewhere in your lines. its easy to check for those and easy to fix too. failed cp3's are not all that common so i'd look for the more common probs before taking it in.

Like he said, Don't use starting fluids. As far as the injection pump being the problem... I have not seen one do that. This really sounds to me like there is a problem with air in the fuel, weather its a leak or just air still in the lines i can't be certain with out actually checking the truck myself. There is also the possibility of a restriction in one of the supply lines.

again if you havent heard it enough, dont use starting fluids.

Not only could the grid heater cause an explosion but the glow plugs can too.

failed CP3s arent common, but mine had one at 5,000 miles so they do happen.

Im sure you woulve noticed this before the clogged filter.

Did you loosen any of the high pressure lines when you were trying to bleed it? When I replaced my head gaskets my brother was helping me. There was a high pressure line I thought he tightened because he installed it. He thought I tightened it for some reason. I bled the filter and it wouldn't start. Kept trying until diesel was leaking down off the motor. Had to take everything apart to tighten it. The good part was it bled the high pressure side and my truck only took maybe a second longer than normal to start.

well i thought there mite be something blocking the lines so i blew them out with air then put it back together and i have pumped till its hard to push and it still wont start i cant find any air leaks and it just sounds like its not getting any diesel but i can open the air vent and diesel comes out of it. its just not making any sense to me

Which lines did you remove to blow air through?

well its up at the chevy house waiting to be worked on and they told me they think its the fuel presser regulater thats messed up

well its been it the shop for two weeks now and the last diesel tech chevy had quit. so i was talking to the shop forman and he said they make 35 an hour so around 7000 a month, so i interviewed for the job today and they said as soon as my background check is done i can have it. i just thought it was funny that im going to have to go work for them just to get my truck fixed. oh well at least i get a discount now

Now thats messed up.:pound::noidea:

I'm debating changing careers myself. I'm tired of puttng up with all the bull s*** that goes along with being a technician. I work with way too many morons and don't get paid enough to put up with it.

(not trying to scare ya though)

I'm a master technician at a chevrolet dealer. Corvette, diesel and electrical secialist.:D:beer:

nice how much do you make? well turns out i have to spend 12,000 they have to change everything that has to do with the fuel. it had sediment in it
