My first diesel pickup was a 1980 Chevy 1/2 ton with the very popular long lasting Oldsmobile 5.7 engine. OK enough about that, my current compression only engine powered rig is a 95 C2500 6.5 turbo, NV4500, 3.73 carrier (I swapped had 4.11) purchased 5 yrs ago with 299,000 reading on an inop odometer. Replaced faulty vss, speedo/odometer works as I should, now has 384,000 on odometer. Bone stock when I got it, replaced waste gate controller with manual homemade assembly, removed exhaust resonator and muffler, straight pipe turbo to tailpipe. Installed new pmd on homemade heatsink partially behind frt license plate mount. Thanks for the welcome to the site.

Driptroit and Leaktroit were the ways everyone out here pronounced Detroit in big rigs- ah memories of the ddec series 60. Kinda surprised it took this long before seeing that as a nickname here.
 
I'm gonna work the truck like I have the last 5 yrs. It has been by far the best running $1100 truck I have purchased.
 
Not sure where the other post went, gave ya a little background. I've repaired 2 stroke mechanical and ddec engines and many many ddec 2, 3, 4, 5's even series 60. I was a tech at a KW dealership for many years.
 
When I purchased this rig for $1100 my plan was to clean/polish and flip within a week, but it started, pulled, steered, stopped so well I plated it and has been my daily driver pretty much except maybe when it snows (gotta 98 k1500 gasser also)
 
The reason I joined up here is I'm getting a repeat occurrence of code 18, 35 and 54. Truck runs like it always did then a huge SHARK bite followed by CEL and if I shut it down to flash out codes it then cranks 5 or 6 rounds before lightn off again (normal crank time 1/2 second and she's running) I've swapped pdm's , r & r optical sensor with one from another pump I have, cleaned all grounds (again) that's about the first thing I do when I purchase a 6.5 with an ECM. Get same codes after she falls on her face hard just like key is turned off and back on. Sometimes it will do it 30 seconds after cold start, other times drive for 50 miles until she does it. My LP is wired to a relay I installed , pump supply to IP never below 1 lb at full load. Check IP return for air get a tiny pin head like every 20 sec or so running eng at fast idle(wired fast idle switch to ECM) doesn't seem like enough air in fuel to cause a prob or to even find the source of how it's getting there. The code 54 is what has me internal ECM failure,vbut she runs, never has stalled or had no start condition just more cranking sometimes to start. Next step is try to get a test ECM or just buy a new one
 
I do run power service with lube in every tank, this low sulferfuel really hurts everything. The CPS I kind of bypassed cuz the codes I'm getting but I think your right it don't hurt to inspect anyway. I have gone through the harness best I could looking for chaffing and such, seems ok. Thanks for the tip, have you guys every gotten that code 54
 
so unplug your OS and restart it. If the CPS is functioning properly than there will be an extended crank time before it starts and when it starts it will be in" limp mode". you can do the same check for your OS
 
DTC 54 - PCM fuel circuit error

This has got PMD and PMD wiring written all over it in combo with the other codes. Do you have the optical sensor harness filter removed?

Spare PMD swapped in?

Extension harness "wiggle test", PMD?

I do not think it's the ECM, but: After grounds look at the positive side of the system to the ECM looking for possibilities it is "browning out". Use a scanner to ask the ECM what voltage it is seeing. Ignition switches supplying voltage and current do fail. This is also a 23 year old ECM. It doesn't exactly owe you anything at this high miles or age. FUBAR ECM's generally don't trip a code telling you they expired. That would be too easy.

Note these ECM's stay alive for around 30 seconds after the key is shut off. So turning off the key and then back on in under 30 seconds results in inconsistent "bulb check" lights being on. (SES STS bulbs. Also the scanners can still read data for the 30 second windows with the ignition off. A real hoot when tracking the APP voltages after ignition off. A igniton on in under 30 seconds would trip a random APP code on my 1995 is how I noticed this.) After it stalls leave the ignition off for 30 seconds to fully "cold boot" the ECM. Then make sure the bulb check lights up both lights (SES STS). If it starts immediately then the ECM may be locking up that a "cold boot" cures. It could also be cooling off a bad connection that allows things to work again.
