Exhaust sugg.for 03 Dmax?

My tune would smoke about half as much as durally max's avatar. I need to build my tranny now, it's limped three times so far.

Its a 4" 409 Stainless I got off of my buddies cummins as I stated above.\

I bought a bunch of 1/2" rod and spent a lot of time bending my own hangers.

I cut off the old hangers, ground them down smooth and welded the new ones on.

I also used some mothers mag polish and buffed the muffler as it is 304 stainless.

I also got some 600, 1,000 , 1,500 and 2,000 grit sandpaper and started polishing the tailpipe. It turned out pretty nice.

I was also able to snake my flex pipe above the frame crossmember up front for a cleaner look.

Needless to say its alot quieter and nicer to drive. And now I can smoke out bikers.

what kinda extra hp you runnin on efi live when you limped?
 
I never had it on a dyno. But I had Nick make me a dsp5 tune for my truck, I just never installed it because I didn't get the switch in. Now you can use the V2 to switch tunes on the fly (LB7/LLY only). I tried out the dsp5 tune he made me after the last time here, and my tune I made makes more smoke than the smoke tune he made me, and is way faster than the race tune he made me. He made them to be safe for a stock tranny. I guess I just went a little farther than I should have. It didn't total it though. It's still good enough to run Nick's tunes, for now....
 
Two trucks an '03 Crew Short box
an '07 Crew Long box

Both have stock exhaust, with the muffler cut out and the same piece of pipe weldin in to replace it. Mine (03) is really loud, the 07 is hardly any different than it was with the muffler.

Anybody know why this might be?
 
A striaght piped LBZ has barely any motor noise just turbo whistle.

WHY?? multiple injections and the turbo itself make the motor very quiet.

Did yu remove the cat on the 07??

Stock no duramax should smoke. Most straightpiped LBZs have a blue haze at idle but thats it.

If you want smoke you need tuning. I see you have a hypertec in your sig. Those dont smoke. If you want smoke you really need a custom smoke tune as any canned tune that makes a lot of smoke also makes a lot of power and tears up trannies.

hey sparky if you got the coin build the trqanny now. Its all downhill from here.
 
The ones with the vvt are going to be quieter. You can change the vane position at idle to make them sound more like a LB7. I think the vvt started on the LBZ, but maybe it was on the LLYs too. My brother's powerjoke has a vvt and it's pretty quiet at idle. If you unplug the wire on the turbo, it's got a nice rumble to it.
 
The LLYs have a variable geometry turbo but I do believe it differes from the LBZs. Not 100% sure though im just an old LB7 guy.

The LLY will never be as loud as the LB7 straightpiped but it can still have a nice tone filled with lots of turbo whistle. They sound like a jet taking off.

The LBZs will have a rumble for a second at startup then they will check the vanes and it will sound like a jet and then a second later it will go back to the rumble. Ive heard a lot of LLYs doing that too.

mine rumble hisses, then goes down reeeaaal deep, over corrects and hisses like a cat, then goes back to a rumble hiss. i really wanna change it to only rumble real deep at idle. i heard an lb7 the other day with exhaust and i was drooling.

Lower your vane position at idle, oh wait- you don't have EFI:heh:

Ah HA@!!!!!! So straightpiping my LB7 is likely why I'm seeing blue smoke at idle (hot)? Its not a ton...it comes and goes....but its noticeable when you're parked idling for a while...I've been told 2stroke helps (I've tried it and so far so good)....My balance rates are within spec (+- 3%) so I can't get new injectors from GM yet...

Most of my DSP5 tunes don't smoke at all, except for one that someone posted that claimed ~100hp (I suspect its closer to 150 since it limps my tranny pretty easily) and the "tranny killer" 200hp tune I have as my base DSP tune. Punch the throttle on the 200hp setting and you can't see cars behind you for a few seconds. Its sweet... but some day my tranny will give up on me.
 
LB7s shouldnt smoke at idle. only LBZs do. Your balance rates dont have to be bad to get injectors. High return rates are grounds as well. Thats how I got mine.

A 100hp tune can limp the tranny. It just depends how the power comes on. If its like a lot of my tune where I ramp up fuel and timing just after the boost comes on it will limp a stock trans. It can still be a smoke free 100hp tune and limpa tranny.
 
ok what about for an older guy that always tows his 5er and don't want any drown but still 4" SS what do you reconnmend and who much. Sorry to hyjack

Interesting news about the tune and limping stock trannys.

Return rates, are those able to be logged in EFI Live? I just looked at my pid selection and can't find something with return rate in the description. I can't just bring it into the dealer with my DSP5 setup. I'll need to cut and/or remove the wires before bringing it in, and bring it back to the stock tune. Of course all that work is worth getting a free set of injectors installed.....

Just looking to find out all the information I need first so I "know" I'll get things replaced. Any help is appreciated.:beer:

No the dealer will have to check the return rates.

Leave your DSP5 in their. it will not cause you to be rejected for injectors. They are not a warrenty, they are a special service policy, basically go into the dealer if ou meet the criteria you get a free set.

Just return it to the stock tune for them. The switch is fine they wont even know what it is for.

And if some dealer goes snooping around and finds out youve been tuning your truck ask him what him why he was doing that and if he gets defensive threaten him with the BBB. They do not need to look to see if you have tuned your truck. Injectors fail just as much stock as they do on modified trucks.

If a dealer rejects you for any reason at all go to a different dealer. And if you are a person who likes to be right, go back to the other dealer with a reciept and say I told you so, good bye, and continue to do business at the other dealer.

billdog350, Where are you located? If you run into problems and aren't too far from Fayetteville, Tn. just bring it by the chevy dealer and we'll take care of you.:D
