You might just have to unplug it and put jumpers on the wiring depending on whether it is a normally open or normally closed circuit. They sure dump a lot of soot in the intake! I just did the manifold gaskets on my '99 suburban with a 5.7.
 
Without tuning it will throw a code. The mass air flow will tell the PCM real quick if the EGR isn't flowing.
