I think some block cracks and crank failures may be due to excessive injection advance. Do electronic 6.5's adjust injection timing based on engine sensor readings, ie, do they sense knock or should I say excessive knock? It seems like a fine line between normal detonation and damaging detonation, which you might not be able to tell apart from the sound.

No, theres no knock sensor on DS4 trucks. The diesel combustion event would wreak havoc on the crystal inside of a knock sensor. The engines that crack seem to be just teh luck of the draw and poor castings. Early engines didn't have much trouble, but the 1st gen squirt blocks had ALOT of problems.
