My buddy just purchased a 2003 2500hd, 4wd ex-cab d-max. 130ish miles on it, one owner little old man only drove it to church on Sunday, blah blah blah.

Test drove it, liked it, let it run an hour, no problems, drove it home 30 minutes and parked it idling. Few minutes later blowing grey smoke, wont go away under throttle, this morning it was worse. Called dealer they said it is almost certainly injectors, he is two weeks over the warranty and they will absolutely not warranty it. They quoted him $3500 too change them.

So, how did this seller get it to stop smoking long enough to make the sale? Is there anything he can do to prolong them, like Seafoam? Private sale, apparently no chance of giving it back. Is there another source for injectors and can they be done by regular backyard mechanics or does it require special tools and a diesel tech?

Thanks

Change the fuel filter to start with. If that doesn't do it start checking other dealers, see if any will good faith it.

Bad deal there... Several guys have done them. 2 I can think of right away is Marty (blizzardplowman) and Vinny (durallymax). Check with them. But there's gotta be a dealer that will stretch that 7 yr/200k warranty by a couple of weeks.

I agree. It's been done, just try a few more.

I was only two months out and I got nowhere with any of the dealerships. Its worth the try but if they wont do it, anybody with a decent working knowledge of mechanics can replace the injectors with vinny's write up... I did mine in my garage with injectors I bought from gmpartsdirect.com

In Louisiana you have a period in which you can rescind the sale...I'm sure most states do...get a lawyer quick if no dealer will warrant it...

Not hard to change, just time. But that said, start with filter sounds like it may be bad fuel.
My local dealer matched GMdirect price for the injectors, all the dealers are slow, so some cash is better then no cash.

Look at performance injectors. I wouldn't use a dealer's rebuilt GM injectors. You DO need a better fuel filter and water separator for the injectors to live in these engines.

Just an example of prices and 50 HP injectors from a place I have used before:
Alligator

Figure on $2000.00 to fix up any used vehicle you buy. I would say you are on budget and knowing the issues (injectors are known) with these trucks not a surprise.

Dealer rebuilt injectors is the best. The dealer didn't build them, straight from Bosch.

BOSCH does the rebuild on the LB7 injectors, and is the ONLY place that has all of the parts needed to rebuild an LB7 injector. And 50HP injectors are known to be louder and not really needed for under 500HP. And if you get CHEAP 50HP injectors, you CAN do some SERIOUS engine damage.

thanks guys, I will relay this info to him. Actually I'll tell him he should sign on here. I saw the truck last night, it's really a beautiful rig. I feel real bad for the kid, he's very young, first nice thing he's ever bought. Course he's talking about performance already, wants to do better injectors and a tune. Told him to start with exhaust and just get it sorted out for now, once it's running right then start with the power upgrades.
He's not even interested in taking the truck back to the guy, he likes it enough he wants to keep it, and got a good enough price it's worth doing the injectors and still not make out too bad.

In all honesty, an LB7 injector can fail just that quick. So the guy that sold may very well not known that it was on it's way out. Tell him to go with a set of ACTUAL BOSCH injectors( DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT go with PENSACOLA diesel remans unless you want to get very quick at changing them out) from GM or a BOSCH dealer and save his money for other stuff. He will need an exhaust, intake, tune, built trans, tie rod sleeves, cognito braces, and most likely a bigger CP3 before he'd ever be able to really see any real benefit from bigger injectors.

another friend of mine just told me he got injectors from Pensacola after the dealer refused to do them again. Had them done at 80k and now they are already gone. Not a pickup, so apparently the warranty doesnt apply. He's changing them himself this weekend, I told him what I'd heard about Pensacola, but it was too late he already has them.

I wish him the best of luck. I had to buy a set from GM and pay the core charge up front, then wait 3 weeks to get my money back from PENSACOLA as they drug there feet then another 2 weeks to get a set of cores back from em to give to GM to get my core charge back.

GOOD NEWS! My buddy gave the truck to his friend who works at a GM dealer, so he could bring it in and do the injectors and at least be someone he trusts. All return pressure were fine, nothing wrong with the injectors. Apparently just a bad tank of fuel. Ran it out, filled with fresh and he's going to change the filter (backordered). Already the smoke is down to nearly nothing.

Man I am so happy for this kid, thought he was going to have to sink a boatload of money into the truck immediately after getting it home. I wonder if the fuel went bad from sitting, it belonged to an old man, it could have concievably been sitting for a long time. Maybe got some bactieria going on.

Imagine what could have happened if he went into a dealer where he didn't know anyone. Bet most would have changed the injectors anyway and took his money.

Well, I think any mods to the truck will be on hold for a couple months. My friends out of work for at least two months after an accident. Going to make a thread in off-topic about it, interesting story.
