Just bought a used ARE camper shell for my truck. It has a three prong disconnect that goes to the third brake light and interior dome light. Anyone know how to wire this up?
Most just hook to one of the tail lights. It will blink when the flasher is on this way, but most don't seem to care. Otherwise you have to go up to the brake light switch.
You might check the wire loom down by where it splits to each rear side. It seems to me that my pickup had a separate wire there for the third brake light. I started, but didn't finish, wiring in a third brake light for my canopy. Reason for not finishing being the need to route wiring where it wouldn't get damaged by the tailgate, which I never got back to.
I just soldered a common 4-pin trailer connector to the CHMSL, and added both the CHMSL & interior cargo light to the camper shell. Even though I used a crappy broken LED floodlight for the cargo area, it still worked great, and was easy to handle. It unplugged easily when I took the camper off, went back easily when the camper went back on, and was out-of-the-way all the time.
