Wow. Your lucky it didnt catch fire...
There was so much water in it that couldn't have happened :p. But yeah I wouldn't doubt it could. It took me 30 minutes start to finish of having the valve body out. That solenoid was so hot that even after the truck not running for 30 minutes you couldn't touch it. I can't explain how hot it was.
 
If it had water in it for any amount of time, I would pull the trans out, and build it while it's hopefully still rebuildable. Water WILL eat the glue that holds the clutches to the steel backing plates as well as the converter clutch. If a few frictions come off, it can be BAD news internally.
