going to look at an 86 chevy 1 ton crew cab long box 3+3, 6.2 diesel in front of a sm-465 wants $1200.00 run's drives, he said it needs axle joints? expensive? hard to do?
Axle joints- cvjoints for front axle on 4 wheel drive? Figure 4 hours to do the first one while you learn, then 2 hours for the other side. Good for a long time after that.
OR universal joints in the driveline? Like $5 to $10 each and 1/2 hour each, Do all of them at one time for piece of mind.
Either way, if truck is in good condition sounds like a good price.
'86 is straight axle. Either Dana 44 or 60. The axles have ujoints in line with the steering knuckle pivots. You'll need a special socket for the wheel bearing nuts. Ujoints r&r like a driveshaft joint. The retaining clips are on the inside part of the joint. Not expensive, but a lot has to come apart.
If the front propeller shaft ujoints are bad, take it to a drive line shop as you do NOT want anything to do with the twin ujoint CV deal right off the t-case.
