Young & dumb, with a new Merc. Cougar back in 86 Pascagoula Ms, Norfolk Va to parents "low altitude flying" 1000 ish miles in 12 hrs 14-16 depending who is with me is normal time driving responsibly.
8-10 hrs driving now at mostly legal limit, is my comfort driving zone, I'll push to 12 if I need to be somewhere and I wasn't tired to begin with, after 12 anymore for me is risky I need a relief driver or check into a hotel for some rest, may not be macho to take it easy.
A near death experience in Italy driving tired when a semi I misjudged from being over tired; his speed, and my ability to accelerate from a stop, getting T boned @ 70 mph right behind driver door made me realize it's not worth it to push the sane limits.
Macho don't mean too much laying in a hospital bed thankful to be alive but praying at the same time to not be crippled for life, thankfully it was just me that was injured had that driver been killed or collateral damage in a pile up killing/crippling another, I don't think I could have lived with the guilt.
I am alive today due to seat belts, and God's grace that I need to share this story, even if it saves just 1 life.
If you have not yet gotten a GPS get one, one thing I have learned from it's use pretty much with traffic flow speeding might save 5-10 minutes at most for any trip, if just you on the highway yes you can save time though it's not often when it's just you though.
