Exactly what was said above. Except the spare plug- before installing it you fill the back side with silicone and let in cure before installing on the spare unit. This is how you keep it clean.
If you have a working pmd now, then only buy one. But drive in the new one from Leroy because it has a lifetime warranty. You have your old one as a spare ready to go. Eventually, the new one will fail. When it does fail or when you are questioning if it is messing up, switch to the spare to test. If you need to send in the warranty one, you have the spare to drive on until the warranty one gets replaced.
Having a spare is like having a spare tire, “wasted” money until needed.
Also there is no test procedure other than “replace with known good” as instructions from GM.
If you choose to buy a pmd or other parts outside of Leroy or other vendors here, mention where you are considering because there are places we have learned to avoid.
When done with the pmd situation, I suggest learning about the rest of how we can help.
Engine temps always under 220 no matter what, balanced foow coolant system (no rear head cooling kits as they cause problems).
Oil cooler hose failures.
Harmonic / balance issue.
These are all most common engine killers.
