Hi everyone, I am going to look at a 05 Liberty diesel. Just wondering if anyone has some insight on what to really checkout on these little guys other than the norm.

Smalll run down on the Jeep

150,000 miles
newer tires
auto
4x4
SVO kit

the bad
Coolant in the oil
heater doesnt work
Owner says doesnt hold oil psi, but that could be the coolant I hope.

I don't know much about them except that the trans in them couldn't hold up to the diesel engine early on. Don't know if they ever beefed them up enough or not.

The low psi probably is due to coolant in the oil ( spun bearings) unless it's cheap enough to do a new engine I wouldn't touch it.

It was the Converter that wouldn't hold the Power.

But with that many Miles on it, that Problem should have been taken care of by now.

Well here is what I saw when I went to look at her............................

SVO system professionaly done. They took out the stock tank and put in a dual tank in the same place. Has engine coolant lines running all the way to the back to warm the oil. I know this is a must but I don't personaly care to have that many feet of coolant hose on a vehicle allong with the fact it is the stock water pump to circulate it. Filler neck is kinda hokey. Open the fill door and you get 2 1" pipe plugs. Seems like a PITA to fill er up. Owner says he hasnt used SVO in her for 3 years now. He just puts good oil diesel in both tanks. On the + side he still has the stock tank that will go with it.

Now for the UGLY>>>>
There is alot and I mean ALOT of oil in the coolant tank. Hardly any green color left to it. He said he hasn't put more than 75 miles on it since he noticed it. He took it to his service station, ( read local jeep dealer) they told him it needs a new engine and turbo. That is why he is getting rid of it. Never told what $ they told him but it scared the chit outa him. They put 3 qts of oil in it to get it back up to full. then he drove it home. the next day he checked it and it needed 2 more. This dealership is about 8 miles from his place too!!!!!!!
I did start it. It started right off (it is about 35*F here right now) and almost immediatly the cap started hissing psi out of the coolant tank. There was also a nice white smoke coming from the exhaust . No sweet smell to it but lots of white smoke, assuming this is oil.

Gonna do some more internet digging on these little guys. I pretty sure they are a sleeved engine, but don't know if they are wet or dry. owner thinks it has an oil cooler too, I couldn't find it, but there aint much room on these little guys. Also need to find out if the turbo is liquid cooled as well.
I found a new turbo on fleabay for $800. but for that money I might put an A-Team on it.

not yet James, however the owner told he is a member there so I prolly need to watch it a little. He said he was on ther to try and fix it too.

Gotcha, see if you can Find his Posts and See what People have said so far, if you haven't already.

The Jeep Libertys are heavy little SUVs, so if its for pulling something or off roading its great. But if its just for a DD or highway vehicle it will waste unnecessary fuel. The gas versions get terrible fuel mileage compared to the GM, Ford or import small SUVs that are lighter with less beefy frame and suspension.

It was a mercedes engine IIRC.
Mercedes=$$$
Unless you are getting it for less than a G I would run. It sounds like a real rag and the WVO would scare me even more. I am no expert on them but did do alot of research as I was considering one. Also had alot of conversations with JD about them(he had one, it was his new love). A suncoast convertor is a must. The reflash Chrysler does to drop the HP for the weak TCC makes it run like Chit and they had egr problems and there were a few other minor issues I can't remember but I don't seem to remember any HG issues but they were not out that long. Plus who knows what this idiot did to it. Just the fact that he would try to run WVO in it would make me pass on it. JMHO.
Also like MM said I think Lostkjs was the place to be for those. I am a member thier but have not logged in since I lost interest in it. I will tell you I drove one and loved the thing. It's a shame they have so many issues.

It's not a Mercedes Engine. Only the Grand Cherokee got the Mercedes Motor.

The one in the Liberty is a little Italian 4cyl from VM Motori.
