Co-Worker's Dakota transmission started grinding going down the road. Pulled off and it doesn't do anything but grind/whir and won't move.
It's a V8 but he didn't say what size.
Said it was without warning sounds.

Doesn't sound to good. If it's a V-8, then it is a 545RFE trans. They're normally a pretty stout trans though. Ask him if teh grinding sund is the normal buzz that it makes going into gear or if it is a metalic type sound? SOundsl ike it may have broken a stator or torque converter though.

He says it sounds like 2 gears not meshing all the way together. He DID have it towed to a trans shop.

Could be the Converter. They are Crap in the 545RFE.

I got that same Trans in my CRD Liberty and if you try to Roll into the Throttle on the Highway, the Converter will start to Flutter and it'll Feel like you are Driving over Rumble Strips.
