DS4 IP rebuild time(mechanical aspect only)

NVW, thanks for letting us know. I hope all's well. He has made a great contribution to the community with this thread. Schiker, I was replying to Bison's request for info on how to test the stepper motor. He asked a few times in this (very informative) thread. As far as I understand it, he...

DS4 IP rebuild time(mechanical aspect only)

Out here again looking at IP info. Debating whether to rebuild my own or have someone else who knows a heck of a lot more do it for me. Not to mention the equipment worth more than my house and everything in it which is required to properly test it. I still have one I haven't tried out, so that...

Yup, I suppose I learned that the hard way.

    Merry Xmas Me!

@WarWagon I also have that on the casting of my starter, as well as factory manual NATP-9431 on page 6D2-7 only listing shimming instructions for gas engines. They interestingly don't make a "Do not shim" statement, they just don't say anything about it. Flexplate was on the correct way and I...

    Merry Xmas Me!

New starter geometry thread started HERE. Any and all input welcome. Dave from Powermaster just called me back a little while ago. Really nice folks to talk to, and they are going to e-mail a label to get it back and see what went wrong. They took quick action once I had enough data on the...

    6.5 Starter Geometry

The purpose of this thread is to collect as much information as possible about the starter geometry on the 6.5L GM diesel engine. Proper starter alignment will ensure longevity of the starter and ring gear. I just got finished changing a ring gear and hope none of you have to do it. I have only...

    Merry Xmas Me!

Bad news. I'm back to my 28MT starter. :rage: Unfortunately the Powermaster did a pretty gnarly job at stripping half the teeth off my ring gear within only a couple months of occasional use. I have been in touch with their tech support but I'm unwilling to eat the cost of shipping the starter...

    Merry Xmas Me!

Well Big T, I've followed in your footsteps, although my boots aren't nearly as fancy. Upgrade complete. I tried to document the whole process but somewhere along the way my GoPro started to malfunction, and despite the fact that it appeared to be functioning normally, most of the video files...

    Merry Xmas Me!

Will, the Delco rebuilt starter did run free just fine on the bench. If the cables are doing their job I don't expect to see much of a drop across them. If I find a cell low on electrolyte I'm bringing them back to the store because I bought them a week and a half ago. I understand what you're...

    Merry Xmas Me!

I've been dealing with marginal cranking speed for too long. Bought the truck with no rear starter bracket - found out that it was missing when I tore enough of the accident damaged parts off to try to get it to fire up for the first time - it fired and it kicked the starter back. Broke as a...

DS4 IP rebuild time(mechanical aspect only)

Hey everyone, well thanks for the words of encouragement. I got it all back together and I am sad to say that although it cold starts better than before and ran great on the road, I parked it and went back an hour and a half later and it wouldn't start. I could hear a little bit of ignition on...

DS4 IP rebuild time(mechanical aspect only)

Hey everyone. I just was dealing with another issue with my truck and was searching for information. In this search I noticed that I never updated everyone on what went on with the issue I wrote about in my previous post, so I'll start with that. The issues with my truck were a little beyond...

Getting old burb back on the road. Looking for advise

It is a replaceable cartridge assembly. I am pretty sure that they are relying on the element to do it all, but haven't cut one up. Next time I'll do so, but I am going to err on the side of it just being a decent filter, nothing more. I am more interested in the concept than anything else, as...

Getting old burb back on the road. Looking for advise

Will I have a gallon of watery cloudy fuel and I will take your advice. The reason that I suggested the VW setup as being a nice idea is because it focuses on maintaining the fuel in the filter and the IP at a constant temp. The VW pump has a temperature sensor in it (apparently they adjust...

Getting old burb back on the road. Looking for advise

On the subject of fuel heating, the IP is in a great place to heat fuel, and should do just fine at that as long as the fuel gets to it. I've got a '96 VW Passat which does NOT have a lift pump and does NOT have any fuel heaters to my knowledge. What it DOES have is a nifty little thermostat in...

    Lift pump function

Mechanical IP - internal to the pump. Terminal is on top, passenger's side of the fuel return, if I'm not mistaken. Electronic IP - round can sticking straight up on the driver's side front of the pump. There's a connector not far from the solenoid. Best 'o' luck!
