Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

LOL I had just found my carbide bit for the drimmel tool the other day! I can go through them and remove all of the flashing. I need to finish disassembly on all of the valves and then do another round of washing. there is a bunch of carbon and gunk under the valves in the ports yet. i...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I placed an order for the lapping tools, compound and some assembly lube so I can start work on the heads this weekend. watched a few youtube videos on doing the valves and I see they all seem to be using some assembly lube on the stems during the process. I will need some anyway depending on...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I assume the WP backing plate is the same between the two timing covers. Wish I could rebuild the WP! the one on this engine is a GM pump and feels fine rotating by hand, but I know the seals .... it's sat up for a long time. I will have a sleu of parts I want to sand blast and clean up...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

If someone happens to have a timing cover that has the hole for the crank sensor and wants to sell let me know, I also have one without the hole for the older engines if someone needs one!

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I guess another silly question is the vacuum pump. I don't need one but this 6.2 has one built on the oil pump drive. are these known to fail and lock up like the belt driven ones? the engine in the 93 just has a plug and I can swap if needed

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I found this one on the bay of fleas! I think its the right one I will need. it shows off an 84, but the pic shows it has the hole for the sensor...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

While I am thinking about it, I might as well start looking for a 6.5 timing cover that has the provision for the front crank sensor that way I don't have to tear apart the engine that's in the 93 and leave it open scavenging for parts for this 6.2. are there any other parts in there that are...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

iirc they just push onto the round part and should stay in place. I've done 305/350 gasser heads before, but I don't recall if there was a sort of barb or something other than a round smooth surface that held those type of seal to the head.

@ak diesel driver when I lookup on RA for an 82 chevy burb with a 6.2 these valve seals show up along with the o-rings. this is the type of seal I'm used to... looking at the tops of the guide I believe they will work fine without any machine work. what do you think? Here is the pic...

How do you all get 6.2s to 300K miles

Correction... I looked up the socket on your rig, I was thinking of the older all metal sockets. yours just uses thin metal contacts and there isn't much you can do to repair them, only replace the pigtails. if it's still clean inside the socket you might be able to take a small pick and...

How do you all get 6.2s to 300K miles

This is what I was referring to as a repair kit for the socket. if you look at the end where the contacts are that the bulb touches, most of the time they are worn out along with the spring might also be squished down not pushing enough on the bulb to make a good contact. you can push the...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I was looking at this compound. and the suction cup tool Should I just go back with the o-ring that was on there? I believe they come included with the head gasket set. the other cup style are available but are sold separately.

How do you all get 6.2s to 300K miles

They sell a contact repair kits which is just a fiber disc with a spring and two wire leads. 9 times out of 10 the contacts are just worn out on the leads. you can repair them if you are handy with a soldering iron. just pull them out and put a blob of solder on the contact.

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

So with lapping the valves, is there a specific compound I need? Or is it one compound does it all kind of thing. I was going to order some and the tool to start working on getting them all lapped in. also what about the stem seals? I didn't find any on this head. do I need them? there...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

It I can get away with the small precups and save some $$ that would be better. don't have much I can spend on this build. I would rather put $$ on the immediate things to make it last and maybe on things I can do rather than having to send to a machine shop if at all possible. Heck if I can...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

Well work in the garage has ceased. rain has gotten so bad that the floor is now flooded with about an inch of water in some area. had to cover the engine with a trash bag due the the leaks in the roof. yard is completely flooded and there is about 2 inches of water standing on the concrete...

Possible Engine Build for my 93 Truck

I found this on another thread there posted on precup designs. I think mine are the original 6.2 J code engine ones. https://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/threads/6-2-6-5-precups.11778/post-144806

And here are the valves from #8 after a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner. That lower grove in the stem was were that o-ring was. idk if that was supposed to be the valve seal, not sure how that would keep oil from getting into the intake/exhaust chambers.
