I thought that by 2008 the 3/4 ton platform used a 6l85e. . .? If so, will probably need a stand-alone controller to make it work.

If it's a 4l80e it will work, but keep in mind if you need parts, there are a few differences between 97 and 08.
And not all 08's had gone to the 6l80 or 6l90(they never made a 6l85e). Yes, there is a stand alone, but you DON'T want to know the price.

Yup, my bad. Had my mind stuck in the GMT400 era. But I did recall that the 3/4 tons got the heavier tranny
