Have 6.5 turbo diesel engine want to replace it

Engine doesnt seem too bad, diesels rattle. But it is smoking way too much, its not cold enough for it to be like that. I guess it warmed up there recently.

Probably has something to do with the timing of the IP. I would get as much info about how the IP is timed and how the cold advance works. If the cold advance is working then disable it and see if it clears up, likes its too advanced, and base timing is too advanced. If its not working then force the power to it and see if that clears it up, which could show that it just needed cold advance, or maybe base timing is too retarded too.

Doesn't look bad to me, could just be engine mounts.

The smoke could be timing or a weak hole.

im gonna start googleing info about how the IP is timed and how the cold advance works. to mess with the IP do i have take off the intake? Does anyone know where the cold advance is?

There are a lot of DB2 smart guys on here, several have trucks like yours, or older 6.2L diesels that came with them. The cold advance operates off a coolant switch. It gets power or doesn't. The only other wires on your IP go to the Engine Shutoff (ESO) solenoid. Ive never dealt with one so cannot elaborate on details. Maybe try Burning Oil, he has even converted his electronic trucks to mechanical. Otherwise Aces or WarWagon have messed with a few.

It's always tough to diagnose like this based on a home movie you tube, but the movement does not look to bad.

Before you go digging to deep what's the injector history? I'd start there and work your way in. Sounds to me like you may well have a ropey injector or two.

Also a compression test perhaps, start ruling out the somewhat simple things.

Just someones lingo for goin bad, maybe on the ropes? My 93 rocks way worse than that but smokes way less. Does the idle ever speed up and stop the lope?

Yeah, I don't know how to time the DB2 but i am sure that is something i will be checking soon too. I would check timing and cold advance first because they should be free and easy to diagnose, then go for injectors which would be good to change out anyways

Look down on the IP, just above the top IP mount nut there will be a line on the pump and timing cover. What do they look like now?

Have you been to our technical reference area, we have a lot of pictures in there identifying the basic 6.5 where is it located information in there you might want to start there.

Do You have a GM service manual ? if not you'll want to search ebay or amazon to try to find one used, before wrenching on these you'll need a basic understanding of what is where on them and how they work with the rest of the vehicle. Haynes has a manual for them which is good for the basic stuff but a lot of the specific stuff is lacking in that manual

yes on the older engines like yours there should be a slash mark on the IP and the IP side of the timing cover they should be lined up the. The newer engines don't have the slash marks at least my 96 doesn't

Yep timing chain/gear cover. You want to see the marks lined up or not more than 3/16" max apart on either side. They are probabaly covered in oil & dirt now.
