Alternators

I used to do buisness with a guy that rebuilt alternators and starters. He did a great job and used the best parts available. He retired and can't be talked into doing the work as a sideline again.
The current shop I know nothing about. Nobody brags on them but then I don't hear bad stuff about them either.
In general if I had to buy, I would buy new AC electric components. I presently have 2 alternators that need to be replaced or rebuilt.

What does the Nappa 140 amp wiring kit consist of?
Are new Nappa alternators any good?
Are rebuilt Nappa alternators with the lifetime gaurantee any better than the 3 year gaurantee models? Or is the only difference the extra cost to cover the warranty?

Does anybody have more of a preference on their electrical components? An aftermarket brand they trust and use?

Does anybody have an alternator for sale that would fit the 94 dually?

You could try Mean Green Alternators, Motor City Reman, Alterstart, db electrical, or Powermaster (to name a few). Most of these are choices for the CB and car audio guys, although I am sure there are others out there.

I got mine from ADVANCE AUTO PARTS and got the REMY brand new one with a lifetime guarrantee. Most all of your remans no matter who they are from all come from MEXICO and aint worth the box they come in. I know that NAPA's aint no better than AZ or any of the rest for remans, never tried there new ones though. Also the supposed new ones if they have a core charge are not new and are normally no better than the value remans with a 1 year warranty.

Go with a MECHMAN Alt.

They are Hands Down the best you can get.

He even provides a Dyno Sheet for the Alternator too.

I've had terrible luck with remanufactured parts int he past, especially alternators. I ended up just buying brand new to avoid any further headaches. I've probably gone through 5 remann'd alternators and all were garbage.

The guys i know that are running most of the brands listed are having good service. Most of the applications are high draw CB or audio setups. I will add that these are high-output applications, although i am sure they sell stock output alts. I didn't post links because of possible conflicts, but a search will get you where you need to go.

The alternator went out on my 95 shortly after I got it in '99. I poked around on the web (much less info 10 yrs ago!) and ended up getting an "iceberg" alternator from an outfit called quick start or something like that.

10 years and 3 sets of batteries later and that thing is still working just fine. Don't hear much about them and I am data point of one, but might be something to look into...

There is a Remanufacturing shop on the SW side of DeKalb that does Excellent work J R. Mars, inc. 815-756-9019
They have done several starters, generators and alternators for me over the years as well as other local farmers. They are not a big contract rebuilder. These guys are good. Just south and west of the old AO Smith plant off of 23. Might give them a call.

Do to time constraints, I took them to the local rebuild shop in Kankakee. I hope this was a good move as this is the closest shop to home. They are rebuilding them to 140 amps. I will run a wire to both batteries. The OEM wire is weak to start with. Truthfully I think 2 OEM wires is still marginal.
Does anybody have a source for fusible links?
