    Default Block Heater Install question for 6.5 Diesel

    Is there anyone who can tell me what needs to be removed on a 6.5 diesel engine to gain access to the block heater and any special instructions on installing a new one. Thank you for your help!

    So, are you just replacing the old one, or did you want to add a second block heater?

    If you're just replacing it, may I ask why? (Most block heater issues are cord-related, and changing the cord is simple)

    If you're just replacing the existing one, then it should be pretty straightforward...

    -- locate it and make sure you can get at everything (driver's side, just back of the motor mount).
    -- you may have to block it up, remove the tire and the inner fender well, if you can't reach it from underneath easily
    -- drain the coolant into a clean bucket; there is a simple way to do that shown here
    -- pull the plug; loosen the center bolt in the block heater, grab the housing with vice-grips and twist - it should come out
    -- Reverse all the above to install the new one.

    Should take a couple hours.

    Beyond the suggestions by JiFaire, You may find that removing the exhaust manifold gives you some more clearance.

    The installation instructions may suggest some RTV around the o-ring. I highly recommend this. The RTV will seal any pitting in the core hole. I did this on both of my block heaters, two years with no leaks.

    BTW, expect to get wet. The block drain is behind the motor mount, and is inaccessible. So the block will hold some where around 1/2 gallon of coolant.

    Here is a picture of mine while installing my engine. (just behind the motor mount)


    Here's a picture showing it when the oil cooler lines were installed. (with the manifold removed)


    If you're looking for a second block heater, you need to notch the starter bracket.

    I always found that fascinating as to how the block drain plug was smack dab behind the engine mount...

    ok, I have a correction. the truck we are talking about is a 1998 NOT 1999. My mistake. I am actually Gene's wife trying to find out information on the computer for him, he would not have made such a mistake, he just doesn't get along well with computers. Please let me know if this changes anything. Thanks!
