What do you guys do when you get the old one off before you put the new one on. I know to fill the new one up with fluid, but was wondering if the best way to keep from fluid running all over the garage, was to just hold a rag or something to stop the flow of fluid while I put the magnet on the new filter. I will be able to see the magnet pretty easy right? Sorry for the dumb sounding questions, first time doing the spin on filter myself and want to make sure I do it right. I have an Allison filter and a gallon Transyd so I will check the level of the fluids once I make the switch of filters. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Just put your oil drain pan under it. You're only going to lose a pint or so anyway-it's not all going to come pouring out........

and the magnet is very visible. if it is not it is not there. not uncommon if it has ever been done before by someone else.

Thats what I do. I just loosen it until the fluid between the filter and the mount runs off. I don't even think its a pint. I leave the drain pan under it while I wipe the little fluid off the mount most of the time have to pull the mag off the mount nipple. ):h wipe it off put it on the new filter that has been filled spin it back on. Drive it for a few miles check the fluid.

I use a the t handle setup with the hose from lubrication specialists. them I prime it right into a cup.. no mess

I just did mine yesterday. I much prefer feeling the warm fluid run down my arm and into my shirt...I dont think it was a pint..Close to it though. I'd have to ring out my shirt to make sure.

The filter is the one from the factory, so I'm hoping it's there. Thanks all for the help.

There really is nothing quite like warm fluids from your truck running down your forearm and down your shirt. Mmmmmm... ):h

Big ass pair of channel locks for me. Put it back on as tight as I can get it by hand. Write the date, mileage and what I did on the filter with a sharpie just in case I forget to enter it in my owner's manual also.

I've never had to add any additional fluid when pre-filling the filter before installing it.

In some ways that's just messed up. ):h

Bleeder Valve Kit for FUEL filter changes

What are you talking about, the fuel filter?

No it replaces the plastic screw with a brass T handle, valve and a hose. That way priming doesn't squirt all over the housing.

Don't think I can post a link..?

):h):h):hMethinks Yaz has failed to notice that this is in the GM Allison section, meaning the conversation is about the little red filter that is gorilla'd onto the bottom of his transmission. He is talking about the bleeder on top of the fuel filter housing. Which, I've seen a pic of the little brass t-handle jobber he speaks of, and I would like to know where to get one.

I just drained the fluid from the pan of my Allison and changed the spin-on at 36k. I put a sawed off 5-gal bucket under the plug, drained it, wiped plug clean, put plug back, grabbed my usual 4" high drain pan, put it under the filter, got the filter loose with channel-locks, rapidly spun it with my fingers to bring it away from the transmission, but NOT all the way off, let it drain, spun it the rest of the way off (only getting fluid on my fingertips). I tipped the old one over to drain the remainder out, recovered the magnet, wiped the magnet clean, installed magnet on new filter, filled new filter up with fluid, wiped transmission-filter mounting surface clean, smeared some atf on the filter o-ring, installed and tightened by hand. Proceeded to put 7.5qts into the dinky little fill neck, fired it up, checked the level and added as needed.

I need to start doing that and start switching over to synthetic.

We need to change ours. I got a Fleetguard filter, is that the same thing? Or do I take that back and go to the dealer and get the red filter?

Hmm, nearest is about 35 miles away, and the one I'd get to is about 50. That sucks. I also need transynd. A dealer that sells the red filter will have that, too, correct?
