My friend has a 8.1 V8. What oil has showed the best results for the 8.1?

Yes it is normal for 8.1s to use oil. I would recommend Amsoil SSO 0w-30 or ASL 5w-30.

I would think that 0w30 would be a little thin...but your the oilgeek! haha!

That is a common misconception, the 0w-30 is not really much different than the 5w-30 at operating temperature. The whole idea of multi grade oils is that is performs across a broad spectrum of conditions, the real difference is on cold starts, and when you are comparing 5w and 0w we're talking COLD.
I've run 10w-30 Valvoline, 10w-30 castrol, 15w-40 rotella... all good at 80K
The 8.1 is famous for oil consumption, most of it oil vapors because of the heat, full synthetic helps ,along with a 180* thermostat.
I'm installing a 160 thermo along with EFI Live.... Let's see what the BB can do

I always ran 10W30 Valvoline in mine but it used about 1qt per 1500 miles from new.
