TSB for the EGR code issue for an 06 LLY

Could I trouble someone for the 2006 TSB that explains the process for correcting the EGR codes and the new EGR motor and valve etc.? Thanks.
 
They usually warrant a full replacement. Mine was replaced during the summer. I hear that the motor gets clogged and stays open or closed, or something like that.
 
this is all that is available now for the egr stuff. it involves the p0401, p0403 codes.

2006-2008 GMC Sierra, Sierra Classic Models, TopKick C4500/C5500 Series

with 6.6L Duramax™ Diesel Engine (VINs D, 2, 6 -- RPOs LBZ, LLY, LMM)​

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2008 model year and update the information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 06-06-04-063B (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).
The EGR Valve Motor is now serviceable separately from the EGR valve assembly. If published diagnostics indicate a concern with the motor, order P/N 98057041.
The complete EGR valve assembly with the motor should be replaced if there is a concern with the EGR valve motor on the following models:
• 2006-2008 Chevrolet Express​
• 2006-2008 GMC Savana​

Important:: There is no gasket between the motor and the valve.

Some vehicles may have a thin metal spacer between the motor and the valve that appears to be a gasket (1). This spacer is used to correct for production variances in some valves and should be reinstalled with the new motor.
Removal Procedure -- EGR Valve Motor


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct, if necessary. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in SI.
  3. Remove the EGR valve motor harness connector.
  4. Remove the four mounting screws from the EGR valve motor to the EGR valve. Discard the old mounting screws.
  5. Remove the EGR motor and spacer (if equipped) from the engine. Save the spacer.
Installation Procedure -- EGR Valve Motor


  1. Important: The EGR valve motor is packaged with new mounting screws.
  2. Install the spacer (if equipped), the EGR valve motor P/N 98057041 and the new mounting screws to the EGR valve.Tighten
    Tighten the four new mounting screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).
  3. Install the EGR valve motor harness connector.
  4. Install the air cleaner outlet duct, if removed. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in SI.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Cycle the ignition key to the run position with the engine not running to relearn the new EGR valve motor pintle position.

Thanks! I have gone in twice already for the same issue. The first time I went in, I asked them to replace the EGR Valve and motor, but they said they had to go through the process one at a time to try and fix the problem (reflashing/updating the ECM and cleaning the EGR). The funny thing is that each time, as I drove home from the dealer, the CEL came on before I made it home. I told them it costs me money each and every time I have to go to the dealer for this, and that the only way to correct the problem was to replace the two parts. Now I am back next Monday for the last time hopefully! I will block it and stick it when I get the new replacement parts. They agreed, but state their hands are tied.

I finally had the complete setup replaced. I talked to the tech and he stated that GM was cracking down on everything and they had to go through the "process" or else they would not get reimbursed from GM. Maybe if GM authorized the complete correct fix the first time, they would have paid out less money to the dealer and would be better off financially, as would I.
 
I am not sure. It got replaced at the dealer. They first did the ECM reflash on the first visit , and then a couple of visits later, they replaced the EGR Valve and motor. It seems OK for now. Is that what you are refering to?
 
When you shut the truck off, you should hear the EGR valve cycling. It makes a buzz-click sound repeatedly for about 10 sec. You may have to open the hood and listen on the pass. side.
 
I will try that and listen. Usually the only thing I hear is the turbo winding down. I will listen for a clicking noise and report back. Did that come with the reprogramming of the ECM?
 
Yes it's me. I'd suggest you ask the dealer if the ECM updates were loaded. EFI Live or a Tech 2 can check the OS. This would be the dead giveaway. The new OS was just released a couple of months ago if memory serves.
 
John, good to see you here.

Mine was replaced a couple months ago as well and my mileage dropped by 4 mpg highway, hand calculated. Pretty disgusted. I know they updated the ECM because my Hypertech wouldnt communicate with it immediately afterward.
 
Is this something the dealer will replace at no charge when the vehicle is out of warranty?

Should I worry about it if I am having no problems?

Probably not for free, but.

How many miles do you have on your truck? When you start to get the P401, P403, and P046C codes, then you will be ready for the ECM reflash, and the new EGR Valve and motor. I had mine replaced at about 35,900 miles. I am not sure if it is covered under the 100K warranty for the motor or not.
