1997 Surbuban, 6.5L, auto, 4x4, 4:10s, 247k miles, new injectors, glow plugs, vaccuum pump, batteries, fuel filter, lift pump within the last year. Injection pump replaced at approx. 150k miles.

I've read other posts on this problem, did the fixes that I found, and I'm still having issues. When driving down the road, my Suburban just shuts off like someone turned the key off. I found a post where they said to clean the grounds. I do that every 3-4 monthes. Still does it, I found a post that said to change the ignition switch, $175 later and it still does it. Cleaned the grounds again, cleaned all battery connections, cleaned all the relays, most of the fuses (found no corrosion on any of these), and the problem is still there. Where do I look at next. I can handle the truck stalling, loosing the power steering and brakes, but I dont' want this to happen with my wife or son driving. Am I looking at a PMD? an Injection pump? I'm a pretty good mechanic, but this one has me stumped.

That sounds like PMD issue. When getting a new one, put it all the way outside the hood.

It happened to me when the black stanadyne failed exactly like what you described.

Be careful though, it will eventually unable to start again sooner than later.

Sounds like a classic case of PMD to me too.

pmdcable.com he is vendor here.

Fireman, I think you and I talked before, I'm in Garrettsville OH, not far from you. My PMD is relocated already to the inner fender. I believe I may have a cable long enough to move it to behind the bumper. Time is not allowing that right now. The prices you show above, does that include the pmd or is that just the remote kits.

Yep Pits I'm up in W. Farmington. I talked to you right after you joined. Was during Help a brother out 2. With the wrench session down at Justins (deere3594).

Here is something I didn't expect to happen, I'm having issues with certain electrical items not working, one time it will be the wipers, next the radio, next the windows. All start to work again after a few minutes. I'm guessing I still have a ground problem. I've cleaned the 3 grounds on the motor, the grounds and positives at the batterys and the ground down to the frame. I'm guess there are others I'm not aware of. I'm also hoping someone local may have a backup PMD they would like to sell, one that they know for certain is good. I've put a couple calls out to people I know that work on these. I hate to drop a couple hundred on something and not have it fix the problem, ex. ignition switch.

1) As has been indicated, get the PMD off the inner fender and get it out of the engine compartment.

2) There is no such thing as a "known good used" PMD. Once they have been heated, nobody knows when they're gonna go.

3) You MAY be able to extend the life of your PMD by removing it from the heatsink, turning it over, and cracking / re-tightening the nuts on the backs of the transistors. Sometimes it works.

regardless, once they start causing you grief, they're done. It's just a matter of time before you will replace it.

Check your fuse box, under the hood, and under the dash panel. Pull and clean EVERY contact; emery cloth, some NalOx to soak in there. All the relays, all the fuses, both the spades (on the fuses/relays) and the clips (in the fuse box)

These symptoms are also common with the ignition switch... when you changed it, did you use an aftermarket part, or an ACDelco one? (I just hate asking that question) Contacts in the connectors to that part need to be clean, also.

I would look at the positive connections at the fusebox for issues. Check voltages looking for a voltage drop say from the back of the alt and then the cig lighter. The wiper board is known to crack and be a problem of it's own. open it up and resolder the plug connectors on the wiper board.

The other things not working could be a breaker popping - they auto reset. Possible you have a short starting.

I just had a wierd electrical one myself.

For a cople weeks prior the radio would lose it memory (not too bid issue these radios are known for that when they start going away) but then one morming no lights, no radio, no blower motor, etc BUT the truck was running!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!? So $19.00 later new ignition switch on thurs. Problem solved right..................
NOPE So sat morning I go out and no cranky. So I figure I lost a battery checked them both nothing wrong there. Cleaned all connections tried again nothin, so I pull the starter. It wouldnt even turn over jumpin straight off 2 big 4D batteries!!!!!!!!!!!!! So new starter an week later no problems. knock, knock, knock,

Maybe check the connections on the starter or maybe yours is going out too.

I am close to you but my "spare" PMD is a fishbiter, I just keep it in case mine went all the way out on me. Sorry I cant help with that one.

Let me know if I can help my FS PMD is $175. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? it sounds alittle like a pluged tank sock. I had simular problems and it was a dirty sock.

I have been only running about $40-50 dollars worth of fuel at a time, letting it get low. I've been riding the motorcycle every chance I get, so the burban sits at home. I think I'll drop the tank this weekend, what could it hurt. Burning oil, I'm going to need some oil for the bike also here in the next couple weeks, I'll send you a message with what I need. Previous owner has been running Amsoil since the first oil change. I do believe it is now time to completely remove the battery cables also and inspect them top to bottom with winter coming.

Well, it died this weekend, would start up then die after a few feet, took me 25 minutes to go 1 mile back home, at least I was close. I put in an old PMD that I bought used after I bought the Suburban, I had put it in once and it didn't run right with it. I thought I had threw it away, but found it Saturday while looking for something else. Put it in and it is running great. Put 100+ miles on it this weekend. Will be buying a new PMD this week. Thanks for the help and putting up with me guys.
