While I understand it's supposed to be a safety feature, I believe man has done without it since the invention of the pneumatic tire. The main point for me is, though, that it becomes an unnecessary inconvenience and the federal government mandates that I have to dismount my tires/rims every so many years to replace the sensors. The other thing is that it increases the price of every set of tires by $100 minimum and if I have a set of summer tires/wheels and winter tires/wheels, then double that.
I agree with you that those that would benefit from it would ignore it. I believe anyone that keeps an eye on maintenance will be checking tire pressure, anyhow.
I tend to buck the system on things like this, anyhow, that remove the human from the equation. We have made society so dumbed down that people don't have to think anymore. The least I can do is take a gauge and put it on four valve stems on occasion.
