Unreal...

It all started tonight while laying down watching TV. Nothing good on, so I figured I might as well change the fuel filter on my truck that I've been putting off. No problem. I've got 2 filters and I'm ready to go.

I start by removing my old blue filter and it comes off with zero issues. Didn't lose a drop of fuel. Perfect. I remove the WIF with Merchant's WIF tool and it goes smooth. Take brand new filter and transfer WIF with new gasket. Perfect. Put O ring on top of filter and find it's a little squirrely but again zero problems. Install filter hand tight. Prime. and VOILA! A nice stream of diesel coming out of WIF. OK. I remove the filter and the strap wrench totally crushes the side of the filter. I mean like caved it in. Starting to get pissed.
I remove WIF and inspect it. Seems OK. Check O-ring on sensor and actually run a little diesel through it and NO leaks. Go figure. So I reassemble WIF onto the other NEW filter I have and re-install it. Prime this one, and it starts to piss like the last one. Now I'm :mad2: Go to remove this filter and strap wrench totally caves this filter in as well. I go nuts. Check the damn WIF sensor again and find a hairline crack under the O-ring.

2 fuel filters, a WIF sensor, and 9:58 on Saturday before Easter so no truck until Monday.

Nice way to start a holiday.....

Thrown, hurled, cussed, and hit something here... damn man, that's no bueno. Sorry to hear about that.

If this info is worth anything to you, I've never crushed a Donaldson fuel filter. Wrecker can sell you them. ;) (I get them from Amsoil.) I've put 15k on each of mine and when I cut them open they're barely 50% used up. Maybe it is just me, but I take my fuel filter off with my bare hands and reinstall the same way. I drop the fender liner to do it and reach in...but then, on a good day I can palm a basketball. :D

That's the thing guys....These were hand tightened..Even dabbed the o-ring with a little diesel. All I know is that the 1298 filters that are white don't stand up to a little abuse as opposed to the blue ones...

Can't say as I've ever damaged one of the Parker/Racor ones I use when pulling them off from above and I always give 'em a slight snug with the filter wrench at install.

I have a spare WIF sensor in the truck just in case of something like this, Ben thinking about going with Nicks new 1 micron filter that omits the WIF sensor.....

hey you should have called. i could have gotten you the stuff you needed. i usually keep that stuff hangin around because i know its bound to happen to me some day.

Thanks Joe...

I went to Partyka and paid 85.14 for the sensor and "cough" 89.35 for another filter. After I went ballistic, I figure that if any good can come from this, is that I burned up 2 older filters and that I can start using the new "coalescer" filters. That is until I looked in my garbage can and found that the 2 I killed were the new coalescer (12633243) filters!!

Someone come here and kick me in the nuts please. I'll feel a whole hell of a lot better.....

If I read this earlier I could of at least hooked you up with a filter for about $25. I usually have one spare in the truck and several on the shelf.
