Thinking About a DPF Delete on My ‘17 GM Diesel – Good Idea?

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 2017 GM diesel (6.6L) that’s been stuck in endless regen cycles, lost power recently, and the repair bills are climbing. I’ve been hearing mixed things about doing a DPF delete.

Some say it boosts performance, others warn about emissions and legal issues. For this crowd with experience on GM diesel platforms, has anyone done a DPF delete on a similar rig?

Was it worth the cost, did it improve things like power and fuel economy, or did you hit unexpected problems like check engine lights, inspections, or resale issues?

Appreciate any real world insights.

thanks in advance for any help

My son has a 2017 GM Duramax diesel. His piss water started showing signs of failure.
He did the delete and now he dont have to keep buying that stuff.
IDK what it may have done for performance but seemed in his talk that he was happy with the results.

Oh yeah, My other son here did the delete You are referring to on His 2019’Dodge 3500 Cummins.
He also deleted the EGR, done the 5” exhaust, did the aftermarket glow plug thing and installed some sort of a tuner device that I can never remember the name of.
Oh Yeah He is happy.
Now at the flick of a virtual switch in the tuner he can go from stock, to tow, to several levels of performance.
One is called the sport tune, oh boy does that ever rip.
IDK what tune He used when he was dragging his tandem axle utility trailer loaded down with lap siding, He reported that He was getting 23 MPG coming home with that load.
There too are several very high performance tunes within that control system.
Anything above that sport tune has warnings about dont even go there unless You have done extensive upgrades to the transmission.
So yeah. Do those upgrades as You see fit.
I also have seen where EPA had to back off on a lot of these upgrades, for now at least.

These trucks are a little pricey to do, but 100% worth it in my opinion.

You will see an improvement in mileage, and power increase depends on what tune(s) you buy. These trucks can make some serious power with tuning, but keep in mind, any increase in power puts more load on the entire drivetrain. It's safest to stay with a lower power level.

I don’t have one but have a few friends that do.

The dpf delete itself doesn’t alter power. You will see a slight improvement in mpg because when a regen is occurring it burns fuel to do it. But not like you will save huge money. Because the delete costs money, you will be out money for some time before the fuel savings is enough to pay for itself.
The difference in power comes when people do a reprogram for more power and can do it more dramatically with the system deleted.

My suggestion is if you do it, save all removed components that you could reverse it in the future if you have to.
My suggestion to do it would only apply if you live in a country that says it’s legal. It you live where it is illegal, then I wouldn’t suggest you break the law even though it will make your engine last longer with the system deleted.😉
