Strengthening trailer

Yes, I'd do a 2 5/16" as well....and make sure you have the ball on your truck rated for 10,000 lbs (1 1/4") shaft.

For pulling my equipment around, I use a solid 2" receiver and the ball with a 1 1/4" shaft...the stock hitch will fail before it ever does. (See photos)

Nice trailer, I dont see any reason to beef it up.

I hadn't actually thought "scientifically" about this before, but the idea of adding to the top and bottom of the C-channel would be the most effective from an added weight perspective (most strength with minimal weight), provided you have sufficient center web thickness on the channel to prevent buckling from the "roll" effect. It seems kinda counter-intuitive. I'd probably load your tractor on it and check the main load-bearing members for deflection, and reinforce any with noticeable deflection (including crossmembers).
