The dimples reduce drag of air around it- proven from golf balls to a car.
But how they help on top of a piston and not air going around the outside of the surface is a hard question.
But there are dyno tests where only the piston was changed and improvements were had… except I haven’t seen any where a computer does adjust for air/fuel and possibly skew the numbers.
How does the dimples improve the flame or pressure against the piston - good question
