Ive been toying with the idea of using soybean oil as a additive to help lubrication due to our low sulfur fuel, any draw backs known of, and what would be acceptable ratio, and was also reading of adding acetone 2oz per 10 gal to get better mpg, any thoughts? and can both be added together?
 
I don't know about the acetone but soy is somewhat troublesome in cold weather as it's cloud point is above freezing and will jell pretty soon below that point. A good commercial additive like Power Service, Stanadyne or Howes work well. I do run B5-B20 from the pump all year around in my area and it has anti-jell and lubricity additives from the distribution terminal. I still add PS anyhow.
 
Im sure you have all seen this but powerservice is # 10, stanadyne is #8, trying to get best for buck, cooking oil is fairly cheep but I do see the clouding issue no doubt there

I think most of us that have been around these forum discussions for years tend to have settled on what works for us and stick with it. In my case, and many others, PS has been on the shelf for eons and works very well for it's cost, is cost effective, blends well with BIO, and has a winter as well as summer formula.
Not saying the discussion shouldn't be re-opened at all... just sayin'
 
I have to agree with Mike here. I would hesitate to use soy bean oil in the summer months to supplement #2 diesel as an additive for better lubrication. In the winter, it is survival, so as to not gel. I use both Power Service white or Stanadyne in every tank. I also use 2 stroke oil as I believe it mixes very well with fuel and provides good lubrication. It all depends on the outside ambient temps in your specific area. I can't speak for Alaska, as I have never been there.
 
Acetone is a paint remover. You may get great millage behind the tow truck as that eats the painted aluminum coating off the fuel tank and plugs the tank sock. I wouldn't trust it in our fuel system as the leftover methanol in biodiesel gives me enough hose trouble as it is.
