Snot Sock??

Over the past year I have been having random stalling, not starting and stuttering problems (fish nibble).

Every time I think I have identified the cause and put in a new part, the problem seems to go away only to happen again a short time later. I am sick of spending money and not solving the problem. All of the items I have replaced or fixed have needed it, but this is getting ridiculous. If it helps, below is a list of what I have done over the past year.

Work done: Replaced fuel line from sending unit to LP, Replaced sending unit (rebuild), Replaced LP (AC Delco), Replaced PMD (remote mounted from Heath Diesel), Replaced Batteries (interstate), Replaced all battery cables, Checked and cleaned all grounds, Replaced starter, Replaced fuel filter,

Replaced ignition switch and control module, Run with fuel cap loose and typical preventative maintenance stuff along the way.
The truck is running fine now, but I am now thinking the snot sock might be the issue. Is there is a way to rule it out. I have a full tank of fuel and really don’t want to drop the tank to get at it if it is not.

Truck is a 2000, 3500 reg cab 4WD 6.5l. It has 178,000 on it and the original IP was replaced under warranty at 68,000.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Eric.

ThanksDoc.
Hopefully I can keep it running long enough to burn through the tank of fuel. You would think they would have made access to a filter eaiser. But then again, it the sock is getting snotty, I guess the tank needs a cleaning. So down with the tank. Would you recommend replacing the sensor as well or just clean the sock and tank.
Thanks again for getting back to me.

If you don't want to wait to burn it, you can drain tank via the lift pump, takes forever lift is rated for 28 gph, when I need to drop a full tank I siphon out the fill, and use the lift pump jumpered to run as shown in the diagnostic post I sent you

Thanks again Tim. Not looking forward to this with the cold weather and all, but who I guess thats what owning an older truck is all about.

When you list big ticket items like a transmission, complete front end, and complete engine then you are having trouble for a high mile 10+ year old truck. The bright side is items replaced have a warranty. Didn't say it made them new and long lasting.

If you are draining the tank with the lift pump Ummmmmmmmm...... Sounds like it is getting fuel through the sock.

Here is how you should start out:
Check for codes.
Filter 'wire' harness on the IP the original? Bypass it.
Check fuel pressure from the lift pump. Do a WOT run with the fuel pressure gauge attached where 1 PSI WOT means everything is working and no sock issue. (7 PSI idle.)
Clear 'test' return line looking for air bubbles.
Test the fuel heater.
Look for water in fuel from drain.

The get serious about connections including grounds and positive battery cables. Take apart and clean as the good looking connection is corroded under the bolt...

NP hey you've got some good guys up there in the NE with you CTChevy another moderator even though he is a DMax guy :) will be good guy for you to know, there is a NE TTS club you ought to hook up with they have Diesel get-togethers from time to time, when I was going to school up there in NY , one weekend we met at Aces1's place in CT and had a TDCO setting party.

You still get flow thru a snotty sock there is a bypass/check on it, flow is not sufficient however to support normal operation, sort of a limp mode and why you must have a sock for a 6.5 and not a gasser sock on it, see pictures in the FAQ sticky

Saga continues. Relpaced the snot sock, system and still stumpped. Went to start it this morning and she fired right up, but about a minute into it started reving high, followed by an almost stall and then all over again? Any ideas on this gremlin??

Shouldn't need one...i've run without one in the past.

So long as a TDCO learn isn't initiated on OBD-II you can run forever with the stored value in the PCM, once a TDCO learn is initiated then PCM will see it missing and you go to a no start condition.

IIRC on OBD-I after X starts the PCM defaults to a "null" #5 or 0^3mm additional fuel calibration flow if resistor is missing

Are you sure it was a diesel sock you bought? People have been given the wrong sock (gas is too fine and restrictive).
