Smoke and stumble at idle

I am betting I have an injector going bad but I wanted to run this by you guys before I go any further. I have an 05 LLY 80k miles with a hypertechIII, 4" exhaust without cat, EGR blocker and fingerstick, LBZ mouthpiece and TXChris air box kit. About a week ago I noticed it running a little raggedy on the way to work. After being driven for 25 minutes or so on 2 lane roads I would come to the light and it would stumble at idle. It doesnt do it when cold and I didnt notice any smoke until this AM when I turned the mirror down to watch the pipe. I am getting a white/blue smoke when the stumble starts. Most of the time it runs fine and it still has the same power, no change in the light black smoke at hard throttle. I just changed the fuel filter and air filter less then 500 miles ago. The only code it has ever had was related to EGR (P0140 or something like that) but the truck has never turned on the SES light. I did just put new wheels and tires on it and had to adjust the speedo with my tuner to account for the small difference in the height of the new tires (it has had 285's on it since new)
For now I am going to put the tune back to stock and see what that does. Anyone have any other ideas ?

Since it's an LLY, the very first thing I'd check is for a harness rub through near the alternator bracket and 2nd would be the #2 and #7 injector connector.

I have the harness near the alternator covered and secured so I doubt its that one. Doesnt the #2 and #7 injector harness issue usually show a code ?

Thanks, I have an appointment to check balance rates next week.

I run power service every other tank but didnt have any in this one, I did put half a bottle of sea foam in it just in case it was some bad fuel.

I went to remove the hypertech and reinstall the stock program and found P0307 (misfire detector)
I also found C0035 and C0201 relating to the ABS, I assume they are unrelated but they just popped up in the last few days.

Since I just replaced the fuel filter I wonder if the bleeder screw isnt sealing and there is air getting in ? anyone have this problem before ?

Somewhere the "ice pick trick" for the injector connector is posted.
There is also some discussion about the primer pump o-ring going bad and letting air in.

I replaced the bleeder O-ring and removed the tune so I will have to wait till the AM when I get out of work to test drive. I did a little checking and the # 7 harness issue supposedly kicks code P0207 as an open injector circuit, wrong code for mine but now would probably be a good time to upgrade mine with the repair kit just to be safe. I am gonna try and get the balance rates checked tomorrow. I did forget to mention that the only time it does this is when its in gear at idle, going down the road or idling in park and its fine.

Thanks again
Scott

Balance rates at idle in park are:
1) -2.3
2) 0.2
3) -3.0
4) -2.1
5) 5.0
6) -1.6
7) 3.4
8) 0.3

#5 doesn't look so good.

What were the rates at idle in drive?

I would double dose the Power Service and run 8oz. of Lucas through and see if the rates get any better.

All I got was in park at idle, this was not when the truck was smoking badly and sputtering, I let it run 15 minutes and still couldnt get it to do it, of course I drove it home and it stumbled in gear as I was backing in. My guess would be that its much worse when it gets to smoking.

I dosed the half tank of fuel I had with a pint of Seafoam and drove it to work yesterday (25 miles) and it sat until this morning at 8, drove it home and it was actually better. I was going to get another set of balance rates this AM but it only stumbled at one light on the way home and I never could get it to do it while at the dealer. I am gonna drive it for the next 2 days and see what happens, hopefully it clears up and it was just a couple of sticky injectors. Hard to believe as fussy as I am about fuel and running power service regularly but crazier things have happened.

After driving the truck again today it idled pretty raggedy so I ran it up and had the balance rates checked again, this one reveals what I expected.

in park at idle
1) -3.2
2) 4
3) 3.6
4) 5
5) -2.3
6) 6
7) 11.1
8) .5

In drive at idle
1) -4.2
2) -1.6
3) -6.0
4) -4.0
5) 3.0
6) -2.6
7) 14.5 This is the P0307 code
8) -0.4 note that at one point this was 7.9 before dropping

Hopefully I wont have to argue on Tuesday to get a new set of injectors.

That's a pretty drastic change across the board. I think you have something more going on than the injectors.

This is the first set of readings I have gotten while it was sputtering and smoking. It only runs this way after I drive it for 20 miles or so. I have noticed an decrease in mileage and an across the board increase in rich smelling exhaust.

Scott..just to be safe since it is showing all that extra fuel thru balance rates, keep a close eye on your oil dipstick and do the smell check regularly to make sure the excess fuel isn't working it's way into the oil...

If you can narrow it to and fix that #7 if it is a short or harness issue, you may see the problem clear up...these engines and programming to a point use the other injectors to balance out the engine and will sometimes throw the other balance rates off trying to compensate for the other cylinders issue...

I had a glow plug tip burn/break off and get in between a valve and seat and cause it to burn a hole in the valve...the result from that was all the other cylinders/injectors were compensating to balance the motor out and all the injectors were showing 7.0+ due to that...

just a chance you may be experiencing something similar(not necessarily a burned valve or anything...just the electronics compensating for a problem)

on a lighter note: we may be dragging the TT down to the fort next time we do WDW and universal...

From what I gathered most of the #7 wiring issues are setting the code P0207, mine set P0307 once only although I understand your concern on the #7 since its been a problem before on these. I did check the wiring and connectors and everything looks okay although thats not definitive. I have been keeping up on the oil checks also. we have several Detroit series 60's at work that have needed injectors and we can always see it when the oil dilution gets over 3% the oil level usually rises enough to tell also.
I have reservations at the fort for Christmas but will most likely not use them, the mouse took a lot of my money this year and with fuel at or over $4 gallon its tough to stomach an 1100 mile trip. We may go next March depending on the economy. We always have a fun time there but its getting harder and harder to get the clan together.
