Had about 25k on the spin on when I changed it last night. Noticed a thin layer or gray sludge on the magnet. Is this normal wear or excessive?

I had quite a bit on mine myself, and that was the orginal spin on filter! I was at 40K or so..

You probably ought to be thinking about changing it around 10 to 15k each time Jared.

I agree.

When I first changed mine I was amazed how crisper the shifts were.

Yeah, and I think I heard that before too, oops....kinda forgot about it. I'll definitely will do it more often now. Thanks.
