Sealant on top of sending unit ???

The top of my fuel sending unit had some kind of sealant on everything.It almost looks like plumber's putty.Is this from the factory or did some one have a problem with sealing the unit?
 
Probably a rust prohibitor. I coated the entire top of my new FSU with about 1/2 tube of grease. Caked it on good.
I think it's just seam sealer. The sender on my 94 has that crap on it. They should have thought about corrosion resistant materials in the sender. The steel lines are like they were bare steel they are so rusty:mad2::mad2:
