I can't remember why this happens. After a successful start, why does the "wait to start" light cycle. Is it one or all glowplugs being powered? Are the EGT spikes that coincide with this event fuel burning in the exhaust or just a spurious electrical signal?

It's called after glow. It's just there to help make sure the cylinders are firing after the motor starts. AFAIK, our rigs are all or nothing with the GP's. They either all glow or none of them glow.

All eight gp's are wired in parallel, both banks coming together at the load terminal of the controller for a total load of ~50amps - in colder climes the controller will call for additional afterglow as engine block, heads, pistons, fuel slowly drag up to operating temperature - that 50a load is quite a drain on the various (+) and (-) wired connections - depending on where EGT guage power and ground is tapped, the needle can reflect those afterglow load surges - in my truck, the afterglow surges can be observed on the Battery guage in the instrument panel

Nice ride in yer avatar, Maj - lookin' good..................
