Well its finally going to happen this year. I've been planning a pole barn build since 2021, but the COVID debacle, life, and everything else has gotten in the way.

The initial plan was for us to build, but my work just takes too much time, family help has their own lives, and its tough on only weekend availability with weather.

The barn will be a 30x40 enclosed with steel and lower wainscot (want a maroon/burgundy and black combo). A 10x40 lean-to off the back side for camper storage, and an 8x30 canopy out from the front gable end. Trying to go 16-foot tall but may suffice with 14-foot. All doors and windows will be black to match roof and wainscot. 30x48 will be concrete while the lean-to will be gravel to try and save some cost.

As many may know I've been working on rough grading this area for years in hopes to get settling achieved. I've also got the driveway 80% there.

Looking forward to watching this get to completion :)

For the lean-to, 10' seems just a bit narrow for the camper. Yes, it will fit, but the margins are a bit tight with little room for error in backing. If the budget allows, might consider another 2'. Just a thought.
You are correct, and in my hindsight I wish I went 12' as the camper measures 8' wide. Issue now is I didnt do enough site work to facilitate the extra width. Second, i would have to go back to the town for a permit revision.

I will have the opportunity for "pull through" worst case but my plan was to get some more bonding time with the wife haha.

I may also elect to just keep the camper in dry storage at our shop like I have been, but I wanted this option to fall back on if it was ever needed.

Protect the posts from the ground. There are a couple different options. Treated lumber today isn’t the same as 50 yrs ago.

Thats one thing I need to ask about.

I know they drill the hole, pour the concrete, once hardened place the pole onto the concrete pedestal. My understanding is placing the pole in the concrete would expedite rotting. Placing atop helps water run off if it gets in there. That being said i also see they either dip or tape up the base of the pole with tar to additionally protect it. Anyone done other types besides the not putting a pole in the ground? Haha.

What type of post do you plan to use? if cut 4x4 or 6x6 treated posts, you could do a soaking in diesel or diesel oil mix and then once installed, trim around them with one-by's to cover and not get it on your hands when swinging around them LOL.

kinda like how the old telephone poles are treated prior to burying.

They will be 6x6 pressure treated.

I haven’t been impressed with ground contact PT. I don’t know about the uc4b heavy duty pressure treatment. Suppose to be for bury.

Depends on your moisture - ground drainage, termite/ bug-microbes levels. Here it is pretty bad. Here I would want minimum a post sleeve.

I’d talk with them and see what they offer.

Warranties are worthless for this imo unless you keep perfect records and believe you’ll be able to find builder and supplier etc years from now.

I will ask what is offered once I get the updated quotes. Still trying to get to the apples-to-apples point between them. Right now i think we are a apple to grapefruit. Main reason we are doing pole barn is the permitting is MUCH more laxed as its considered agricultural. No need for full blown stamped plans.

Two other items in my head are:

• Requesting full tyvek in case I go with spray foaming. I want a barrier to keep foam fron sticking direct to steel.

• Also need to ask if tyvek will cure vapor issues up on roof. I hear dripping condensation is common with a metal roof?

My thought is spray foaming (if I can afford) or rodgid foam board for the walls and batt insulation in the ceiling.

I do believe that there is other alternatives to rot free construction types of materials other than wood products.
Might ask about those options too.
If using some sort of PT to the concrete sonic tubes(I think is what they is called) then use the steel clips that sandwich two opposite sides of the timber.
Just be sure to leave a gap between the floor of the plate and the butt end of the timber to allow for drainage and so moisture can evaporate away from the timber. After posts are thoroughly fastened remove whatever spacer was used to keep the distance.
Could also drill larger holes into the post anchor so that those larger construction type of screws could be used instead of them tiny deck type screws.
Just be sure to drill pilot holes into the timbers and be sure that the holes are not in alignment with each other in how the wood grain runs, might help to prevent some splitting of timber.
Again, someone such as @ak diesel driver can correct any of my misinformative ideas.
I too have been thinking of gable formed extensions on each end of my garage and over the years have seen how others have anchored posts to concrete and what I would do different to allow the posts to hold up for many years to come.
Not that I’ll still be around in thirty or forty years to observe any failures but it might be possible that some form of my family might be. 🤷😹
