It has a rattle noise at idle, im pretty sure it just does it when its warmed up , no other way to explain it , it def coming from inside the trans, its not real loud buy loud enough to annoy the shit out of me is their a way to tell if the 5th gear nut is loose without removing the transmission.

5th gear nut isnt a problem in 6.5 NV4500's different design. Try checking/changing the oil and see what that does, only put amsoil or NV4500 specific synthetic synchromesh in the tranny.

How is the shifting between gears? 2-3 3-4

fly wheel has nothing to do with the 5th gear, completly different side of the tranny. The 5th gear on ours doesnt have much if any stress on it, I have heard of any issues with it. I have had my 300K mile abused tranny apart and 5th gear was fine.

It's normal for them to rattle at idle. If it has knocking sounds while under a load, then you lost some teeth.

I know where the 5th gear nut is, ithought maby it wasnt a problem with the 6.5 bec they came factory with a dual mass flywheel which would have absorbe the vibrations that cause a 5th gear nut to come loose

There SHOULD be a dampner on yours, atleast my 94 has one.

The gears will rattle some but if this is a new developement i would be looking for either a bad internal bearing or a synchro rubbing if it is FOR SURE in the tranny case, thats why i asked if it was grinding between gears. Another possibility is the pilot bearing is worn or some other clutch part went out (it happens no matter how new the clutch is sometimes). If you just recently change oils in the tranny then there is a possibility of the wrong oil or atleast the different oil allows for some extra clatter.

Its not the pilot bec i replaced the throw out bearing and had the trans out and saw the pilot bearing was fine, and i used the trans fluid from the dealer ship maby im a little low on fluid bec the output shaft seal did have a slight oil leak but i replaced that recently

Like i said, just because the parts are new doesnt mean they are good or didnt have a factory defect. Check the fluid level, maybe you will get lucky and just be a bit low. If not just drive it until it shows symptoms like binding clutch or grinding gears.

Mine all have a hum/rattle at idle and even a whine/ light ginding sound cruising. They are just straight cut gears made for strength not silence.

What way is their to check the fluid, when i changed my fluid i took out a pto cover bolt drained it and then filled it with the proper amout of quarts of syncromesh i think it was

There should be a fill hole on the side. Fill it up until you have fluid to the hole, some overfill by 1qt at the shift tower but i havent tried that yet so i cant tell you if its worth the trouble.

It should be Syntorque or the GM / Dodge bottled/branded specific oil. The part numbers are posted in a few threads. I thought syncromesh was like ATF and definately the wrong stuff it was for the NV3500 iirc.

Seems I remember someone saying thier NV4500 did not have a fill plug either and I think it could be filled via a PTO cover bolt. Sounds funny after I think about it not sure about height of PTO cover from my memory vs fill plug. Mine definately drains via a bottom PTO cover bolt. I'll try and look at mine tomorrow. IIRC my fill plug is on passenger side and is a Female hex - "allen" plug.

Does it groan excessively lugging 2nd gear or other bad noises? Note mine groans pretty good lugging in 2nd gear up a dirt road hill and lugging its normal to be noisy.

yes it does if you just let it idle along and try to go up a hill, it will go up the hill fine idleing but does make a grawling noise

nv4500fillplgsm.JPGFill plug on mine is Passenger side about even with the PTO cover 2nd bolt from top or about 5" from bottom of transmission case. Not sure if all PTO cover bolts are through holes or if one is specific fill port.

Goans and moans are normal lugging I was wondering if it was excessive. Going through parking lot or on road mine is not noisy.

I'd try to overfill it some either through shift tower or messy way of squirt in fill plug and plug before extra oozes back out.

Transmissions do get noisy with old age though. I had a mighty max near the end with 260K miles the manual had noises and whines.

If your truck is 4wd it prolly wont have a dampner in it either. IIRC none of the 4wd had it, the short output shaft and t-case didn't leave enough room for it.

Both of my 4x4's have a dampner. Mine also make a groaning noise when lugged, there is an older farmer with a low mile 24valve w/ nv4500 and it groans too. I figure the groan is somewhat normal.

A lot of time the noise in nuetral can be traced to the clutch disc either being the wrong one or having the damper in the center of the disc worn out. If the disc doesn't have the damper in the center, it is the wrong part. The damper is a nylon part that allows the disc to absorb harmonics and will actually allow quite a bit of movement before the disc moves.
