hey gang i am very new to the whole diesel thing !
so i got a 2000 ext cab 1 ton dually 2wd 6.5
i already removed the cat now my waste gate is all screwed up so i "wired" it up and installed a boost gauge i'm only getting 10psi on hard acceleration about 4psi on cruising speed (bout 55-60) so being a complete newb and not wanting to risk any damage i have ordered a waste gate solenoid from ssdiesel but my question how hard is the manual one to build and how does it work excatly and using a spring does this allow for the built up boost to move out when needed? as i very new any help would great! thanks scott:mad2:

Youre more limited by the stock computer than the wastegate. Did you diagnose the problem as being the solenoid? Could just have cracked lines, easily checked with a vacuum gauge.

My recommendation would be to look at Walking J Designs for a reflashed PCM to get you your boost and power. Try it with the vaccum system and if not happy then yes you can easily build a manual one that works pretty good.

Sounds normal cruising for my dually pig too. I have to really feather it climbing steep highway grades to keep boost under 10, I recon heavy acceleration i'd push 14+, but since I drive like I'm 65 and blind too I don't.

In fact, I think I'm going to bring mine down a little bit more. I'm beginning to think the optimum boost is right on the threshold of seeing a hint of black smoke on heavy acceleration, then turn it up a tad more....

Cruising boost really doesn't do much but waste your MPG's, spinning that turbo when you don't need to takes drive energy in the form of added backpressure, and will increase the Intake Air Temps.

Added boost does keep EGT's down (Exhaust Gas Temps), which does keep the firing chambers, heads, and exhaust cooler too, so its a tradeoff.

Fill out your sig, and post some pix so we can see your new beast!!!!

WELCOME to the site friend!

Added boost only decreases EGTs if you arent burning all the fuel. If you already have enough O2 to burn all the fuel then more boost is detrimmental and will increase IATs, EGTs and Head temps

On my GM4 I have a noticeable power difference between 18-20psi and only 14-15psi peak. Meaning the extra boost is burning more fuel that I program to put in. So I recommend anyone run 15psi of boost. Ive been doing it on my stock 94 for a few years with no issues, as long as ECTs and EGTs are not climbing too high.

On a stock program 10psi might be enough though.

Even piping hot IAT air is way cooler than the temps of the combustion chamber, so wouldn't it just make sense that the more of that cooler air you 'cram' in there, the cooler the overall temp of the fire chamber would be?

I guess to a point maybe... It does increase temperature by compression alone... Which is exactly how our diesels fire in the firstplace...
