So... I'm currently in process of getting a replacement engine for Loretta (Fastburn 385 with lt4 500 cam and 1.6 roller tip rockers, hei ignition, carburetor engine . Going from the original 94 tbi with 4l60E. Have heard from some I have to get a stand alone unit for trans to shift. (Mind you I haven't swapped yet) am thinking on if it would be easier to go with 700r4. Expected 400hp or so frome engine.

Welcome. Nice looking rig you have there. Yes exactly what ak said. just depends on what your preference is and budget is. the cheaper and less headache route would be a 700r4. another option is the 200r4 if you want lower gears for highway cruising. but it will need to be built strong.

in factory strength, the 700r4 is better but both can be built to withstand up to around 1200 ftlbs of torque.

Edit: someone correct me if I am wrong... the 700r4 has overdrive but no TCC lockup, the 200r4 has both TCC lockup and OD.
