On my '05 with the Allison 5 speed there is a significant increase in engine braking when I manually shift from 2nd to 1st. So much that I don't like shifting into 1st if I'm moving much at all, I don't like the clunking and shuddering as the truck gathers it's composure and settles into gear. I'll use the brakes to slow down to 5mph or so before shifting.
The '09 with the 6L80E. When I'm going downhill in the mountains I'll have it forced into 2nd going around 15mph, the steeper the grade the more I ride the brakes. When I force it to first gear I have 2 things happen. One the rpms skyrocket (duh), and two the truck will start speeding up. If I let it go back to 2nd the truck will start engine braking better and I'll slow down. I don't touch the gas at all during all of this. Even starting from a standstill, 2nd will hold the truck back better than 1st. All other auto tranny trucks I've driven weren't like this, 1st gear always had more engine braking capability than 2nd.
