Mercedes Wives, last summer began to work poorly, stood all winter. TurboDiesel 2.2 liter common rail OM611.961, He removed the head and there was something dancing in the 4 cylinder. The intercooler pipe was torn, most likely a pebble was sucked in. Lunar landscape. Houston we have a problem.

Wow, that’s no fun. Better have a really close look at the turbo.
Normally that much damage and I see glow plug tip missing. Was that plug replaced for hard start by chance?

This is a reason I wish we could get gaskets like the pictures for our intakes. Even if you scatter a turbo- nothing gets through.

The glow plug sticks out in place a little, the hole in the center is the nozzle channel.

He took out the exhaust valves, the seats were not beaten, the valve chamfer seemed to be intact too.

The head is fixable. Use the same porting and filling techniques used in modifying heads for performance to bring it back to normal. As long as doing that, might consider a little better unshrouding. Smooth air flow has as big an impact as volumetric improvements.

The flame front and burn of that cylinder must have made it sound like a bent rod. I bet that cylinder burn dropped over all performance by 25-30 hp.

The piston I would replace for sure.

Then the “while you are there” monster pops up his head.

Obviously checking cylinders, probably boring them. Gapless rings on #2. Coated bearings when it all goes back together.

So these marks are just carbon, not dings? IMG_7951.jpegIMG_7950.jpeg
