I found a guy on craigslist selling a 1995 turbo diesel truck with 68 thousand original miles on the truck. The guy who owns used to use it for a farm truck to haul horse trailer etc. In the last few years he has only used it to haul stuff. Can anybody give me some details on this truck pros cons? Heres the link to the truck. Thanks for your help.

(I drove the truck runs good and 4x4 does work and doesnt make any noises etc)

i just found out that the the truck had the injector pump replaced at 50k. Any info? Trying to decide if i want it or not the guy told me he would take 4000 for the truck.

Welcome, nice looking truck. If it passed the test I wouldn't hesitate on buying it, pretty low miles.

Leo

This is a light duty 3/4 ton. 6 lug vs. 8 lug. Likely has EGR.

Yep, check it out good especially for overheating signs... ask the guy how high on the gauge he lets it get when towing... try to make him say where it goes to. They don't like over 210 for prolonged periods, even though the gauge shows red at 260.

Low mile 6.5's are hard to come buy. Worth more just for that IMO. If it passes, jump on it.

Thanks for all the reply's! I have been reading about this engine and wish i had that link when i was trying the truck out. Over all i did check a good bit. We started the truck cold and let the glow plugs sit then turned it over and started right up no smoke nothing sounded great. let it sit and run for 5 or minutes and look over the engine etc. Didn't here anything that concerned me. took it for a drive everything worked fine shifted good and ran smooth.

When i punched it no smoke didn't take off like a hot rod but def had some good tork (spun tha tires). At 65mph it was running at 2-25 hundred rpms. Seemed little like it wasn't going to overdrive but didn't feel like it was down shifting when i let of the gas. I could be wrong. Then pulled into a parking lot and put it in 4 wheel drive seemed to check out fine both high and low. no knocking or wining from it.

Got back looked over the truck again didnt see anything leaking etc. I did however see a little oil/greece? on the bottom of the rear end (pumpkin) nothing fresh just dark grime on it. Any ideas?

I liked the truck a lot just wondering if i should be worried about anything?

P.S. Interior was in great shape over stuff leather seats all lights worked only one tare in the drivers seat (where there is always one). Also very very little to no stains on carpet.

Thanks again for all your help!

AK is referring to torque converter lockup. when you run it through the gears you should feel what feels like 4 shifts, first to second, second to third, third to fourth, and torque converter lockup. Also these trucks freewheel when you let off of the throttle, that may be a little wierd to you the first time you drive one. My buddy is a transmission mechanic and he said they do that so it doesn't brake the input shaft on the tranny when you let off of the throttle.

Nice find and welcome to the site. Lots of advice and assistance available here, take advantage of it.

I always try to establish a maintanence baseline to work from when I purchase a used vehicle.
Replace Filter and flush fluids; clean out the radiator and ac condensor; inspect brakes (I usually just replace the rotors/drums pads & shoes); confirm PMD location and start saving/investing for a remote FSD set up if it hasn't been done already; pick up a spare OPS.
Then there's the fun stuff like upgraded exhaust and other toys.

Prioritize your projects. I try to go with Safety, Preventative Maintanence and then Performance/Candy.

Enjoy yourself, however you prioritize it.

Thanks for the welcome. Heres a little more info on the truck.
the guy i bought it from is the ORIGINAL owner of the truck. He only used it for little things that's why it only has 68k. The interior is dirty but i am in the process of cleaning it today. No cracks in the dash and only 2 rips in the seat. All leather and every light works. Im in love with the truck, and cant wait to start to do the necessary things first then the fun stuff. Now i need to start the major to do list.
Thanks for all your help!

Ok its question time!
1. A remote FSD set up; pick up a spare OPS. Where do i find this and where is it located? How hard is it to do this?

2. Likely has EGR? What does this mean (is it bad that it has it?)?

3. I have repleaced the air filter and put oil in it (Im waiting to get the oil changed tell i find the kind of oil and place to use). I plan on flushong fluids; clean out the radiator and ac condenser and anything else you guys suggest.

4. What else should be on the list?

5. And lastly what should be the first performance upgrade?

Thanks for all you help!

1. prett easy ops is at the back of the engine I'd put it on a relay and make it bullet proof. Hardest part of remoting the pmd is getting it unplugged from the old one.

2. exhaust gas recirculation alot of guys are plugging them but until you get a chip leave the vacuum hooked up

3. check lift pump, vacuum pump

4. first thing I would do is the exhaust then guages then chip then turbomaster

Thanks for the info. Is there a kit to buy to do the relay and relocation or is it make it yourself?
Lift pump and vacum will be added thanks!
Any other pointers are always much appreciated.

Welcome and congrats on the great buy. Before the summer, you'll want to clean the cooling stack, more info if you search.
If you didn't get the build codes from the PO (Previous Owner), use the link above to get all the details on your truck.
This site is full of great people that will actually help when needed.

Search is your friend, 24-7, and never has attitude ;)

A few other pieces of advice. When get ready to do a modification or part replacement like Dave said, "Search is your friend." There are tons of posts w/ people doing whatever you are going to do. Sometimes they can be hard to find but they are there. You can also look in the "Sticky's" under the "Diesel Technical Library." Most of them are linked to directions on how to do whatever it is you are doing. Finally if you can't find something you can post a new thread here for help. If you want advice for doing a specific mod like your pmd relocation post a thread on it. You don't want to post multiple questions in one mod unless they are related. For example you wouldn't post a question on changing your brakes and then ask about your pmd or fuel filter manager.

Ok i am having problems locating the pmd. Could anyone give me a pic of where it is in the orginal place?

I don't have a picture but if you stand in front of your truck w/ the hood open obviously :D , you see the oil fill tube close to the center. Just inside of that is the thermostat housing. You're just about there. Now look at the upper intake in the center of the engine. There is a gap/valley between the upper intake and the thermostat housing. The IP is down in there. If you get up on your bumper and look down on the right side of the IP you will see the black PMD. The plug for the pmd is pointing toward the cab. I hope this helps.
