I saw on the power block TV show a while back where they are building a cummins(12V i think) and they supposedly fixed the Killer dowl pin...Does my CR 3rd gen have this too??? Id like to spend a little money to prevent it then have to fix the motor later....

The HPCR engines don't have it. The KDP is a 12valve thing. In 98', dodge went to a different style hole which made it impossible for the dowel pin to come loose on its own. So you have nothing to worry about

Essentially, the KDP is located in the back of the timing gear case. Its an assembly index pin that is "press fit" into the bore. Problem was that the tolerances between the drilled bore and size of the timing pin where not tight enough and the "press fit" in many cases wouldn't be nearly as tight as it should be. Eventually, the KDP(killer dowel pin, see where it got its name?) would vibrate loose and can actually get caught in the timing gears. At that point it could either: A) get shot out of the timing case very violently or B) get caught in the spinning gears and bring EVERYTHING to a very abrupt and violent halt causing serious damage. The better one was A, and usually that wasn't the case. The KDP can be fixed with a "tab" or the poor mans fix of locktite in order to prevent it from coming out.

Some fixes call for drilling a hole and installing a bolt to prevent the pin from coming out with measurements to check if the pin in loose without a total tear down of removing the cover.

There is all kinds of ways to "fix" the KDP on the 12 valve engines. Cummins(shame on them), recommended just filling it with locktite. Which is the least preferred method. The most common is, like you saw, using a tab "kit".

Others I've seen is tack welding it, like war wagon said drilling and tapping it for a bolt, using a bigger index pin, JB weld... and some others I can't remember.

Either way, you get the idea:thumbsup:
