I've tried reprogramming my FOB and it doesn't seem to work. Is there a battery inside that I need to replace? It doesn't look like it comes apart, but it probably splits in half? right?

Yep. Split's right into, becareful because they will break pretty easy. Theres a watch battery inside..:)

There is a notch where the ring goes through, take a quarter and give it a twist it will come right apart. The battery is a CR2032 if you have a Radio Shack their P/N is 23-162. Good Luck

How would you reprogram a new fob on a 2001 GMC 2500HD?

Tony

I would think they're all the same to reprogram, but here are the instructions:

1. Close all doors.
2. Insert key in ignition.
3. Hold down the power UNLOCK button on the driver's door panel (continue to hold down until instructed to release in step 9).
4. Perform steps 5 thru 8 in fairly rapid succession.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (without starting engine)
6. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
8. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
9. Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The vehicle will lock and unlock the doors automatically.
10. Hold down the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the FOB simultaneously until the door locks and unlocks. This step may take up to 30 secs.
11. Repeat 10 NOW for each additional FOB
12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode.

Hope this helps Tony and good luck.

good writeup. Maybe you should post it in the how to section.

As for the battery , just look and youll see the little space for seperation of the two sides.

I got an xtra one thru Ebay. You will have to research a little on what part number will work. Don't know if the 02's & 05's were same part#. Some of the FOB's on Ebay have application listings.

You'll have to have a remote control door lock reciever and have the BCM programed for keyless entry also. Most likely your truck will not have the RCDLR so you'll have to instell one. It goes under the dash cover on top of the instrument cluster.

You might also want to check and make sure that the contacts in the remote are clean. They tend to have a build up that accumulates on the contacts. just take some rubbing alchohol and wipe them off

if the remote starts acting funny it could need replacing too. i've had two remotes go bad on me before the bettery ever did. i tried replacing the battery, no go. tore it apart, cleaned inside (gets dusty where i work), still no go. bought a new one, programmed it, worked fine. i dont know if its luck of the draw for me or if gm has ****ty remotes but at 60 bucks a pop..... **** that.

well im not gonna do it then.

The truck never gets locked anyways.

Heres why

10 They have about 20 miles before they overheat, breakdown or run out of gas.

#9 Only the owner knows how to operate the door to get in or out.

#8 It is difficult to drive fast with all the fence tools, ropes, chains, syringes, buckets, boots and loose papers in the cab.

#7 It takes too long to start, and the smoke coming up through the rusted-out floorboard clouds your vision.

#6 The English Shepherd on the tailgate looks mean.

#5 They're too easy to spot. The driver's side door is red, the passenger side door is green, the right front fender is yellow, etc.

#4 The large round bale in the back makes it hard to see if you're being chased. You could use the mirrors if they weren't cracked and covered with duct tape.

#3 Top speed is approximately 45 mph.

#2 Who wants to steal a truck that needs a year's worth of maintenance, u-joints, $3,000 in body work, tail-lights and windshield?

#1 It is hard to commit a crime with everyone waving at you
