Hey guys, i have an idea/ question. i have a 93 6.5 diesel gmc that is currently all stock aside from a DIY cold air intake and having turned the pump up a 1/8 turn. the truck runs great and everything works as it should.

My question, when i first start the truck for the day and its in cold adavance with the idle up around 1200 rpm it seems to have alot more power than when its in the normal operating temperature, this is because the internal pump timing is advanced i belive? So i was wondering if i could rig up a switch to make the internal timing of my pump advance even after the truck is warmed up? im certain i could figure out a way to do this but i worry that i may blow up my engine or maybe the truck isnt making anymore power and im just wasting my time? does anyone have an opinion on this? good or bad idea?

Perhaps your timing chain is elongated and your IP requires a retime?

As the chain elongates (not stretches) it gradually retards the IP timing and can be repaired by either replacing the chain, or retiming the pump if the chain is still in spec.

You are feeling the cold advance turn off for sure. You can advance the timing 1/4" and really feel a difference, but, you risk popping head bolts and blowing the mains out of our crack prone blocks.
power is best by air and 1/2 turn of the screw. 4" exhaust, loose snorkel, loose POS GM3 turbo for an A Team Turbo, head studs and new timing chain. A dime's width advance is usually enough as any more and you smoke black too much. Black smoke when the cold advance is on is ok as long as it quits when the cold advance shuts off. GM3 with 1/3 turn on the screw had that result with the black smoke...

Well i dont think the chain is stretched it has plenty of power after the advance is off, it just seems like it has a little more get up and go while the advance is on. as you can see from my sig i have had a 6.5 with most of the goodies on it before... i was not impressed with how long the truck lasted after doing those things though as it blew up about 2 months after. i think im going to put a 4" exhaust on it and leave the rest of the truck alone. its a great daily driver but will never make the power i want it to while staying reliable at the same time. i did buy a 7.3 super duty to mod up that i wont be daily driving. just thought i would bring my advance switch idea to the table. thank you for all the info!

Running the cold advance on fully is great until it warms up. I have my fast idle and cold advance solenoids hooked up to switches in my 83 (same basic engine) and the cold advance usually gets turned off once up to operating temperature.

It sounds really metallic and runs slightly hotter when run like that, so this is why i keep it simple. I have switches with LED's in them to know if i have them on or not...but i can tell just by the idle sound whether it's on or not.

yes i know the exact noise your talking about lol. it gets a whole lot quieter after it hits 95* atleast thats what mine is set to anyway.
