I got my first truck back…

It’s been threatening to rain the last few days so I haven’t bothered trying to clean the outside but it’s gonna need a serious bath outside.

In the mean time finished the seat covers on the front seats. Not sure I like the center console condom thing but we’ll see. I’ll work on the rear bench tomorrow.

Gave the interior dash and door panels an initial good spray and wiped down with some industrial interior cleaner. Got a good amount of grime cleaned up but still plenty more to go. Might try the steamer in a couple of spots.

Also got a magnetic charging phone holder installed as I have started driving this more.

Get You a can of this stuff.
IMG_1820.jpeg
It lifts that embedded dust out of all og those crinnies and crevices on them dash boards. Leaves them looking factory clean.
Add Your own waxy shine.
I like lemin scent pledge as advised by a long time old GMC/cadillac parts counter man.

I used to use Pledge ony guns

Well the rain today added something to my project list and may change my priorities. I was planning to look at the blower motor, controller and resistor but located a pretty decent water leak on the passenger side. It seems it’s coming from maybe the base of the windshield on the passenger side. Hard to locate precisely with the rain still falling today.

It seems the water leaking from the windshield area down the right side a pillar and behind the kick panel to the floor/door sill channel. My best guess at this point is the water leaking is hitting the blower motor or resistor and/or the connectors. So before I tear into that and replace parts I need to address the water leaking issue.

Probably be best to wait for the rain to hold out so I can pull some panels and try to locate the intrusion point by controller where the water comes from.

Find a smoker. Someone that smokes cigarettes, or, buy a pack and light one up, have someone drive the vehicle, hold the cigarette close to the suspected area. The smoke will be sucked out through the area where the water is coming in from.
An old trick I was taught back in the day when smoking cigarettes was cool, some pot too. 🫣😹😹😹
If You cant find a smoker, then see if You can find one of those punks thats used to ignite fireworks, or, maybe a smoking hot gal, but thats an invisable kind of smoke and dont work so good for leak detection. 🫣😹😹😹

Oh yeah, The vehicle most likely will need to be taken up to a decent highway cruising speed for the experiment to work.
Unless its the smoking hot gal experiment, then an out of the way parking place might be suggested. 🫣😹

What about a haloween fog machine? one of the biggins.... just fire it up inside the cab, close the doors and wait till it begins to seep out from the areas in question.

the GMT800 platform I have heard have an issue with the windshield sealing as well as a plastic cover under the wiper cowl. my buddies 2001 burb had been setting in my yard for about a month, before hand everything was working. last week or so ago I pulled it out only to find both drivers and passengers front floorboard area was soaked. blower no longer worked ether. pulled the blower motor and found the motor full of water and rusted the bearings. did a poor mans fix by blowing the motor out with air, squirting wd-40 in it and spinning the motor by hand till it freed up. now it works again but warned my buddy about it saying we need to pull the cowl off and any trim around t he glass we can and seal everything up with some black RTV.

Not RTV.
Urethane for leaks around the glass. Other areas too I would think.
Urethane cures with humidity.
That windshield glass replacement calls the state put me through told us it is okay to mist water on a fresh install, helps the urethane to cure quicker. He said to not use a forceful stream but just a fog mist.

Fog machine probably be okay but then it takes the drive with some speed to see where the smoke is being sucked out at.
I think that just setting and watching where the smoke is escapimg from might take long time now. 😹😹😹

A break in the rain today means I get to figure out where the water leak is coming from…

Haha thanks guys. Got a chuckle.
I actually tried a smoke machine I have for finding vacuum hose/evap leaks. Didn’t really do much. Mostly was drawn to the rear assuming from the vents at the back of the cab.

So I pulled the cowling cover off, aside from being extremely dirty which I cleaned up as best I could, the cover over the air inlet seems to be intact. I’ve seen others that were just a plastic cover clipped in place with a seal or gasket. Mine seems to be a metal cover that’s sealed with some kind of lap sealant and the integrity seal seems to be pretty good. The black drip seems to be the primer from when the windshield was last replaced ~15 years ago.

I cleaned up everything I could inside and outside of the cowl poured some water down inside the cowl opening didn’t get any water inside port a lot more still didn’t get any water inside. started pouring from the top of the cowl still didn’t get any water inside. Worked my way up the a pillar took the garnish off the side of the windshield Cleaned that up as best I could. Poured water down the a pillar still no water inside. Poured water from the top of the windshield on the passenger side let it run all the way to the edge all the way down the windshield to the cowl etc. still no water inside. Finally ended up pouring water above the top of the windshield on the driver side about over the steering wheel, instantly water started pouring inside. Bingo!

It was a pretty significant leak. The whole passenger door sill channel was filled and the carpet was soaking it up along that whole side.

Basically the water would drip behind the seal above the windshield on the driver side run across the top side of the headliner board to the passenger a pillar run behind the passenger a pillar trim down to the dashboard dripped down behind the dashboard and would basically drip into The blower motor area and it would drip out of there onto the floor and then down into the door sill.

Not sure if just good ole silicone bead across the top is worth trying, or start with a piece of clear tape across the whole top for now, or just get it done right and have it all resealed.

Get a tube of urethane windshield sealer.
Do not use RTV sealant.
If RTV doesnt fix the leak then You have a real mess on Your hands.
After RTV is applied then if a professional shop is called to the mess, the glass would most likely need to be removed in order to get the frame cleaned good enough for the Urethane to do its job.

I cleaned it up real good. Letting it dry out for a day. Windshield urethane arrives tomorrow. I also called a couple local glass shops to see if they had any ideas or a way to reseal it without destroying the windshield. We’ll see if they call me back before I tackle it tomorrow.

Pulled the blower motor resistor and…….
1739063499141.png

1739063515547.png

The resister has left the chat.

SERIOUSLY,
WHERES THE REST OF IT?
I searched all through that box in the resistor slot, filter slot, pulled the motor. I can’t find the other part of the resistor circuit board.

Oh and the blower motor was sitting in a bowl of water basically and it’s rusted solid. I finally got it to spin but the bearings are all crunchy and jacked up. Time for a new blower motor too.

Date code on blower and resistor both from early 2000 so both were original which I’m not surprised, I never changed either and I know my dad never did either.
