I was at Advance today trying to find a CDR and we stumbled upon that by accident. it showed a Hypertech performance chip for 281$. I could not find it on the website but when I go back to Advance Monday I am going to get more info.

I spoke to the techs at Hypertech and they do not support the 6.5 anymore, havent for many years. I had one, the one I had was pathetic if it was supposed to be for performance.

Not to mention it runs HOT! I had one and blew both my head gaskets not towing anything with it in.

I found that there is one in my pick up. Had some weird codes and after I cleared the history pulled the comp to check the connections. Just for grins I looked and seen the Hypertech name with a date of 94 on it. The out dated mosfet memory chip on it has me wandering if it could be the cause of the random codes I get on occations. Every now and again I get a dtc 55 PCM failure with some other codes. Clear the history and those codes don't come back. But always the dtc 55. If they run hot, that would explain the 550*f egt crusing 55 empty with the 4" to 5" stacks. It was the same with the old 3.5" exhaust I had on it when I got the pick up. Maybe it's time to replace it.

That is a huge stack of a chip too isnit it? You wonder why they had to stack it so high and put so much stuff on the circuit boards when GM used just a plain old single EPROM.

No kidding. Two boards stacked high and the chip on top of all the surface mount components. I opened the little door and thought "this just can't be right". I'm just wondering if it should be replaced with a up to date chip.

John

Programs have improved a whole bunch since then, John ... If you can replace it, it will surely make a big difference in how your truck runs; maybe as much as the difference between unchipped and chipped!

I know that the truck before this one had no chip in it and was a completly differant truck. The non chipped one was a 96 and this a 95. The 95 has alot more get up and go compaired to what the 96 was. I'll have to see how the bank is after this round of head gaskets goes. And now for the hard question. What would be the best for all around *and* towing? The best MPG I seen was 10 months ago at 19.8mpg. I'd like to have that again while empty.

John

That's a loaded question, John ... everybody is going to weigh in on that.

I've seen pretty comparable trucks with Westers chips, Hypertech chips, and Heath Max-e-tork chips. I liked the Maxetork best, and the new GL4 is better. That being said, KOJO is doing good things, Kennedy has built several variations of programs, and there are others.

Bottom line? Nobody really knows. Everybody likes what they like, and will tell you that, but there are a lot of variables... boost, gearing, state of tune, weight, etc, etc... people will tell you that vacuum control is best, mech turbo control is best, more tunes is best, one tune is enough, you name it... if somebody tells you that one is superior, be skeptical.

Go with who and what you trust, and with a vendor that will back up your purchase. Good luck!

I have never seen Heaths fuel economy program, but I have had Hypertech, Jet, BD, Westers economy and racing, and Kennedy power tuning, Heath power tuning. And I got different time eras from them as well. Bought a couple myself and got some on ebay, junkyards and what not. Anyway, they all pretty much sucked as a whole truck tuning on older stuff, just fueling and boost changes for the most part.

The latest stuff from Heath is the best I have seen as a total truck experience programming, but that was the power program. There are parts of it I don't like, but I am pretty picky programming my own truck. I have also discussed programming a lot with Kojo and I know he has the know how and tools to make them run well.

I tried posting up a file I made showing stock PCM parameters, fuel, timing, boost, tranny pressure and how they can be modified for the benefit of power and economy. Mainly getting more power and not losing economy is what most people enjoy. The file is a little too big from all the 3D parameter curves, I will have to shrink the pictures and try again.

So, Buddy, what your saying is Heath is good but Kojo would be the better choice? They are all about the same in price but all claim various hp ratings. I know for the real truth in the rating I'd have to hit a dyno to see.

Friend of mine has the hypertech in his 95 1500. His truck runs hot, to the point where he now has headgasket(or worse) failure rearing it's ugly head.

His truck normally runs around the 205* mark. Add the plow on and it'll climb much higher.

Either would be alright. I dont know if Heath got rid of his core charge, but Kojo doesnt have one IIRC. If you want to see what the stock curves look like just PM me an email address. I still need to shrink them to be able to post the file.

As always check the damn grounds first. Then check the voltage to the ECM esp from the ignition switch. Low voltage "brownouts" to the ECM will cause random codes. The ignition switch browning out the ECM is an intermittent failure so consider replacing the switch anyway. Check fuses for corrosion. Check both batteries and the alternator as low voltage or AC voltage from failed alternator diodes can cause havoc with a DC computer.

The Chip can be the cause of the code 55. So can a cracked connector or plain ECM failure. Then your best bet is to replace both the chip and ECM as a bad ECM can fry chips. Rare but not worth saving the $88.00 exchange cost for an ECM. Only take this route after checking the voltage as suggested above.

Imadave- I can't blame the chip on my head gasket problems. I was running nice and cool right at the 180* mark when mine went. My current issues are due to warped heads. I hope. It ran warm with the stock stat in it. But just under the 200* mark empty.

Buddy- Heath has a $150 core. I'd have to go to the bone yard to get a core chip to send him. I'll pm you. Only have driven one stock truck and that was four years ago.

Warwagon- All the grounds have been hit. Some twice just to be sure. With the heads off and time on my hands I repaired some that had corrosion. The 55 is always when the truck is running great. I've cheacked the batts and the alt since it was all apart and I had time to do it. That and I wanted to get all the parts when I could so replacement would be easy.
