How do you all get 6.2s to 300K miles

try out that app on your phone called Fuelly. it's easy to keep track and get a average over several fuel-ups. also keeps track of receipts and money spent.

biggest things that change mileage are wind direction along with going up hill and down hill plus elevations. if you want to get picky, don't fill it to the brim, I always do the one or two clicks when the nozzle shuts off and call it. print the receipt from the pump and enter all of the info into the app.

there are a couple of guys here in the forum that use the app and have the results in their signature like me!

Come to the conclusion that, its just the nature of the beast, or, pop the rocker covers, valve springs and install new valve guide seals.
The good ones, the posi seal units.
Then I think that blue smoke on a starup will greatly decrease.
That is oil thats burning off the tops of the pistons.
Oil leaks past those bad valve seals when it sets for a while.
And believe Me, these engines delivers a LOT of oil into them valve covers.
If You dont believe Me, just get one of those covers to leaking.😹

Well sirs, the trip is so far a success, the 6.2 meet up went well

Speaking off, if yall have Reddit, please let me know, as the 6.2 GC is ever growing and it could greatly use your knowledge on these motorsView attachment 96172
Nice photo!

donno if its allowed over on reddit, but I would say if some of those folks wanna join up here in the forums for help or just to join in on the fun. most of us don't really do much in social media. I am a member there on reddit but mainly to get help with my 3d printers. there has been a lot of what I would call turmoil there in reddit over the site owners and admins along with bots. most here try to steer clear of all that stuff LOL. Not talking bad about the folks there but rather the site it self and all the bots.

Yeah, that would be the simplest.
I’m already a member in three social media sites and IDK how many groups.
Several Jesus type groups and several HD groups along with a couple or three old pickup truck groups.
I’m also a member in the gmsquarebody forum, the hdherd forum #hdherd and I am most active in the HERD forum and this one.
The most active SM site is MeWe. There’s a lot of action over there, mainly in the Jesus type groups and several Harley groups.
Gab social has a couple of 6.2/6.5 groups but they dont get any action, none at all.
This right here is the best no BS forum group out there and I forgot too, I’m also a member of diesel place and another one too that will lead a person astray on info and such.

Honestly sir, the 6.2 Group Chat (a separate entity from the Diesel Subreddit) is truly free of the things that plague most subreddits.

To the others here who have Reddit, Id really be great if you all commented (or send me privately) your usernames on there so I can add you to the chat, the GC would most certainly appreciate your wisdom and knowledge on these motors (that and, a GC is more responsive than an online forum)

Hey yall.

A few updates since my last post:
Differential fluid change
Revisiting the spare 6.2 Motor (1990 varient)

Differential update:
Changed the Differential fluid on the K5, rear one looked a bit milky, while the front one looked decent (both me and suburban bro looked at it), figured id change the fluid and look inside since I have no idea when the fluid was last done on either of them, below you'll see photos of the differentials, first four will be the rear, last four the front end:

Let me know what you all think, never had an issue with either of the diffs while driving, 4x5 works perfectly fine aswell, I have used it a few times, though not nearly enough.

The spare 6.2 motor:

As ive mentioned before, the 6.2 in my 1990 K5 was swapped out of a 1985 K5 itself, when I bought my (90)K5, the other (85) K5 came with it aswell, though we couldnt keep the other (85) K5, nor there was much to salvage (interior was wet and had mold) we yanked the motor out, and kept it on the side.

Now on to the spare 6.2 itself, below you'll see photos of said motor, let me know what you all think of it, the paperwork associated with the motor said that it would overheat, hence why the swap was done, suburban bro did a compression test on it and it would read 180. 20251019_141847.jpg20251019_141849.jpg20251019_141920.jpg20251019_142135.jpg20251019_142350.jpg20251019_142352.jpg20251019_144225.jpg20251019_142757.jpg20251019_144234.jpg20251019_144421.jpg

Let me know what you all think of it, its inside of a storage unit so at the very least it is safe from the elements, my friend also has 6.5 parts alongside it aswell since the truck that he also has in the storage unit also had a 6.5 in it.

Seems that install a clear 1/4” fuel hose on the return system, fire it up and ready to roll. 😹😹😹😹
Get a cheap HF engine stand, hang it, dint roll it over, pan side down then Pull the pan and then pull the heads.
Heads most likely are cracked between valves. Also, from what I read a lot about, check the number 8 cylinder bore as that is the engines hot spot and a good chance there is most likely a crack in that bore.
Now roll the engine over and check the main webs, if they are cracked, salvage from the block everything and the heads too, haul those three items to the scrap.
Or bolt them back on and leave it on the stand, its good storage and movable too.
Beats laying on a pallet and taking up all that room.
A HF hoist with removable legs is mighty helpful and dont use a lot of room too.

Leaving it hang pan side down and pulling the pan keeps residual oil in pan from leaking through the engine and creating a terrible bad mess.
No matter if the pan is drained, still plenty enough oil to make a lot bigger mess.
