can anyone tell me whats going on? have 95 suburban bought with seized motor couldnt find 6.5 to save my life so did 6.2 with 6.5 goodies ran great for week pdm quit replaced with cooler runs great two months later clutch fan dies, over heats so do heads and gaskets and new injectors while out i pull old pdm off ip while everything off starts up great in garage but once outside does this start die start die kinda like no fuel, but pull plug of cts on cross over bam fires right off, so i assume bad sensor replace two weeks great start normal puff of smoke with high mileage diesel, today bam back to start die start die pull of plug starts like new what am i doing im going nuts here any help out there, oh new oil pressure sending unit and temp sensor and new batterys bigger cables great grounds and lp is hot wired on with ignition for some reason when i got it it would never shut off so wired it to ignition on please give me any input

welcome fellow alaskan! I had an IP do something similar to yours, except for the dieing part. Solution was a new IP. But first look at the cheap easy stuff. Hows your fuel filter? Put a pice of clear tubing on the return coming out of the IP and check for air bubbles. Did you buy a new PMD or did you just put your old PMD on a cooler?

new pmd new fuel fitler mabye few thousand miles ago ran great before i worked on it, thinking ip but why does it start problem free with cts unpluged could it be plunger on fuel shut off? and i know nothing on age of ip has 220,000 miles on it so cant imagine orignal but it smokes enough to make neighbors want to call fire department lol but last week starts great, new glow plugs checked volts everything seems good it has to be something intermit

the CTS is used to control the cold advance which I believe is what's sticking in the IP. Are you running any fuel additive?

I think i had some 2cycle mix and white stanydine in tank i have a 45 gallon tank so i haven't fueled up since October, sad huh, I filled tank right before i shut it down to do heads. I don't go go much of anywhere so i think i have close to 250 miles on it since did heads and gaskets nearing 1/4 tank left. Im stumped Ive been reading all these different forums and have become quite knowledgeable, these things are great but it seems there are like four possible answers to every problem, any input is great

you could always pull the plunger on the shut off selenoid just to rule it out. It's a pretty easy job. Is your throttle pedal kinda unresponsive when it's smoking?

throttle seems ok just adds more smoke to neighborhood I live in a condo so im the black sheep of the neighborhood lol Ill pull plunger tomorrow and see Im at a loss it ran perfect before I did the head job and perfect last week, cant see that ip would go just like that, but who knows but after its warm starts great runs great smooth great throttle its no blown 454 but gets up and goes and have #9 resistor and i been getting 16 mph out of a 2500 suburban not bad

Battling same thing here......IP is very possible, but time your IP first......as said before rule everything else out first, Air, OS, etc.

IIRC....another member (Bison), same thing............IP solved the problem.

What's your IP's history.....Do you know?

The CTS, do you use ACDelco?

There is also possibility of water in fuel?

How is the Lift Pump? Is it Pumping?

How does the filter look? Possible bugs in fuel that sat that long plugging screens. Smokes like, well, like what you have with bad fuel and plugged screens. Screens, are: Tank sock, last ditch screen in fuel filter manager, and screen on IP fuel fitting inlet.

no water in fuel, not ac delco cts but pull it off runs up idle put it on idle falls only few weeks old but orilleys generic, removed optical filter sensor, lp is running great haven't measured pressure but its enough if cracked will spray all over motor, so im not thinking that, Im curious if any know the true process of the ip and how it works it seems everyone replaces and problems are solved but if i can solve by getting a 90$ fuel shut off much better than 1000$ ip or if optical sensor all these possible parts but everyone chokes down the big dollar item. Im not done working on it I just cant see it working so good after a warm up and what is the the key to the heavy white smoke which is a off and on occurance, I have a 95 gmc pickup which tomorrow I will start switching parts to see if i can catch the culprit.

Mine did exactly the same thing with the smoke but had a low idle while smoking and the throttle pedal was pretty much unresponsive. If I unplugged the CTS it would start instantly with no smoke. It would only do this on a cold start and gradually got worse until I replaced the IP.

As I suggested above, check the screens for plugging as this will cause smoke. The IP's move a lot of fuel to dump back into the fuel tank. Water in the bottom of the tank, but not getting to filters, will allow bugs to grow. I had good pressure, but, at RPM and throttle the restricted screens show up...

ok been working on it guys I found one of my "new" injectors was barely leaking between top and bottom, didn't fix but surely helped, so trying to start does it same thing start die so I unplug cts fires up so watching exhaust I plug it in bam white smoke runs rough pull smooths out no white smoke so I shut it off and unplug the stepper motor bam starts no smoke then for fun I pull cts off runs idle up put on idles
down so both do different things in my mind I'll try tomorrow to start again
with stepper motor plug off and see if no smoke I think I'm
on the right path yippie

started this morning, without stepper motor advance plugged in bam fired up no smoke no ruff idle im thinking its the bad unit can the vehicle be ran without it?

Stepper motor adjusts timing (on the fly, I believe) for the IP.......I don't know if you can run without it.

Did you check the IP's timing?

So unplugging the stepper, works the same way as when you unplug the CTS......Or was there a different result between unplugging each one?

never checked timing, but never changed it from before head job and never had
a issue before, but cts and stepper did sperate things when unplugged, so at this point I talk stepper plug off start and then plug back on after 5 minutes just not sure if replacing would fix online found it at s&s for 150 but wondering if something else is communicating with it to tell it to over fuel, I'm not entirely sure how it all works, I'm positive if I replaced entire pump all troubles would be gone but not so happy choking down high cost and waiting 6 hours if I can just replace stepper motor, my uncle has a shop and told me my cousin with 6.5 had same issue and fixed it with stepper I think I'm willing to gamble with 150$

ok, ran for a day with stepper off saw no difference at all, plugged it back in and same deal hard start and smoke, so just to make my life easy Im gonna replace whole IP seems like more money but It solves lots of problems at once there seems to be many issues with this IP and I have no history on suburban other than the people I bought it from told me it was cherry but motor blew, later finding out many issues, front end, heater, window broke, almost all electric controls in window controls toast, so my dream of buying a 1000$ gem and telling the wife a used motor and we would be cruzing, lol, now Im like 4500 into it now its 90% cherry and looking at 599$ for a IP pump from ss diesel so all said and done could have bought a runner for 5000$, but where is the fun in that!!!! so without knowing what is telling the stepper motor to advance or possibly being stepper motor seems logical to replace IP and solve many issues at once and know what I have and know that there is some life ahead of it. Nothin worse than telling wife to take rig out and having it fail on her, not a place she or me wants to be, so Ill bite the bullet and replace IP gonna order tomorrow
