Help! Engine ran away on startup after turning up IP

Hi all, worried and need help..

I finished a 6.5 turbo install on my 6.2 diesel m1009. As part of it, I turned the IP up 1/4 turn. Before starting I touched the pink wire to the IP and heard clicks ( I thought I did anyway)....Started it, and the engine ran away. :mad2:

I grabbed a rag and stuffed it in the intake and smothered it..Whole ordeal lasted maybe 10 seconds. Really hope I didnt hurt anything.

Today i took the cover off the IP..I reinstalled just as numerous videos and articles inform..Touched the pink wire..No Click. Where to turn and what should I do? Could the linkage somehow be installed incorrectly?

My 93 did the same thing. The linkage just above the screw was reinstalled incorrectly and wasnt moving freely through the full range of motion (stuck wot)

Did it hurt your engine when it happened?

I just took the top cover off, everything looks good and just as it did before I disassembled. I dont know what I should be looking for?

The trick is to slide the cover from the front of the ip back after setting on the IP. Front being headlights and back being tailgate.

Shown below is the contact point for the solenoid. The IP is at WOT, full fuel, with the valve as shown below. The governor linkage on the passenger side needs to move after engine start to reduce fuel. If the solenoid is behind (Toward the back of the engine) the contact point in the IP it actually holds the metering valve in the full fuel position. The solenoid in the correct position pushes the valve to the full closed position. Only on compression braking does the valve ever close with the engine running.

You can also move the throttle lever and verify everything is working, however, even at WOT the solenoid will shut the fuel and thus engine off.

To shut fuel off the linkage on the passenger side has to move back to the tailgate to rotate the valve to the off position.

Use a board, plywood cut out, to shut down the engine if it runs away again. Diesel engines are known to eat rags while running away...

No clicking - don't start it. Test both solenoids for clicking to eliminate confusion. Both must click. The cold advance doesn't matter for run away, but, in case you get confused both clicking is what you want.

Thank you! I removed the linkage..Looked at it, scratched my head, then put it back together. Contacted with the pink wire and it clicked. Went ahead, fired it up and runs great.

Now to chase other wiring issues, oil pressure and coolant dummy lights are on..Truck runs/sounds great though.

I smothered my truck out with the carhart jacket I had laying over the fender. My buddy (a cummins guy) jumped sky high and messed his pants when the 6.5L lit off like that, he was supposed to smother it but I got around pretty quick. Truck was fine after.
