Well, its been a while since we talked about the cams from Heath Diesel and who was going to or already running one, so let's talk. Anyone running one yet? What's your opinion?

Is anyone using a cam other than stock? Let's talk.
 
Well I'll talk about a Heath Cam. I have one in my engine now. After all the hard times getting the parts, under warranty, from Diesel Depot, I bought a 40K mile 1982 6.2l diesel, stuck a set of Celvite bearing on both sides of the connecting rods and both sides of the stock 6.2 crank shaft, bought a brand new set of 6.5 heads from Pennisular added a Heath towing cam and a GM-3 turbo. No problems, at all, at 63mph I get 17.5 miles per gallon. And that is with a 98 ex-cab 4x4 dually, 4L80E, 4:10's and 265x19.5 tires and wheels.

Well over 15k on the engine and no problems. With my car trailer, the total weight is about 13,000 and that gets me 12mpg. With the monster truck chassis on the trailer, and the trip, to Texas I got 10mpg.

How's that!
 
Well Paul bought all the parts of my old engine, including my GM-8. All of the special extrude-honed parts. Extra parts on hand, at the time, was a GM-3 with a turbomaster. Get good boost, as much as I want the engine to take. The engine also has ARP head studs. I can climb most any grade, with the trailer loaded, getting close to 15 pounds of boost and water temperature close to 200. I get good performance, boost, and good mileage with the way I am drivng now.

Rode in Turbine Doc's pickup quite a few months ago, in Slidell, La, on my way back to Vegas after delivering the chassis to Conroe, Texas, and that beast did really haul the mail. No lag with his big A Team turbo. Met up with Tim and Pepperidge.
 
Thoughts of a bigger turbo have crossed my mind, many times. The way Tim's 1/2 ton GMC flat got with the program really amazed me. And the fact that he pulls his gooseneck trailer and gets good mileage also got me thinking about a larger turbo. But this is the first time my thoughts got out on the TTS! I just wait a while longer.

Adding a few other items first. Running board/fuel tanks and special low winch mount for my other 12,000 winch. Got to keep the radiator open for all the needed airflow.

Now I will tell you that a few days ago I went to take off and gave this little weak 6.2 some fuel to go and I just spun the tires. The little GM-3 turbo spooled up real fast and spun the tires so fast the trans shifted right thru the gears. Then I let off the throttle hit the brakes to stop the rear tires from spinning, put the truck in 4 wheel drive and drove off the ice and onto the highway!!

I hit 15 pounds of boost at 1,900, in this real cold air, real easy and it will get a lot more boost, if I'm not careful. I have hit the 4,000 rpm mark with no problem, just to see how hard the engine would pull in the higher rpm range. Can't say it pulled any harder at the higher rpm but no problem getting there. I only have a 15 pound boost gauge so I will stay in the area where I can watch the needle. Cruising at 63mph the boost is at 4 pounds and the exhaust temp is about 400 degrees. Good enough for me.

I got the towing cam. For weighing in close to 8,000 pounds and the engine being a 6.2 with new 6.5 heads along with the little GM-3 I think it does what it should. The power curve is a lot more that what I had expected. It will pull hard all the way thru 4,000 but I won't be doing that again. I did say the engine has ARP head studs but I forgot to mention the Fluidamper.

What was the $ on the cam? Maybe cost of cam kit and no chip for a 93?

After I unloaded the monster truck chassis I headed south on I-45 and took I-10 east. Stayed in Baton Rouge that evening and met up with Tim and Paul. As I said Tim's pickup really hauls the mail. But the part that really got to me was when Pepperidge got on his Duramax and was hazing the rear tires at an excess of 80mph or so! I can't imagine that much power!
Left Slidell, pointed west, and got caught in heavy traffic at Baton Rouge. Got off I-10 went north a little then east towards I-49, thru Alexandria and turned west at Shreveport. Saw a lot of country, and new sites, I hadn't seen since I quit the long haul / heavy haul in 98. Alexandria was elavated and no roundabouts. Shreveport area was a maze of very high overpasses.

Maybe going to have Sunshine, Paul Richmond, over here again this fall for the last 2 NHRA races. If he shows up we will go on another extended road trip. Vegas and then east and south then west to Pomona. Have about 10 or so days to travel.

635 could be there with his HT#4 Cam equipped truck and I'd go up there with mine which is a variant on the HP#3. (I'm trying to get the thread back on to cams).
I know with my build, the HP#3 wasn't compatable WRT valve clearance and new pistons due to the deck surfacing. Rather than shave the pistons, Bill did a re-design on the cam. I don't know what was done but to my mind, valves open and close. When they open, for how long, and then close for the bang part and how to figure that all out hurts my head. Trying to explain my reasoning for how I think it is made to work would really show my ignorance. :o
